if you find yourself saying suddenly, "What the hell is a tent
full of beer-drinking, ballad-singing patrons doing on
that front yard?"
Your answer, simply put, is that that isn't any ordinary
front yard - it's the Ark, that those people are all folk music
fans (but otherwise normal) and that the tent transforms the
ordinarily inconspicuous lawn into the remarkable Ark Pub
Sing.
The pub sing is the Ark's semi-annual out-of-doors fun-
draiser. Like its Hill Street neighbors suggest, the action
usually takes place inside, but in order to double capacity for
the infrequent alcohol serving occasion, this weekend is dif-

ferent.
As it always does, the Ark has some first class entertain-
ment lined up to go along with its tent. The Friends of Fid-
dlers Green and Owen McBride, British Islanders all, are a
pair of rowdy singing/story-telling acts out of Toronto.
In describing their acts, Dave Siglin, the Ark's director
said, "First of all it's laced with humor... They both know a
lot of jokes...They (the Friends) flesh out the songs with in-
strumentals when they want to, which is only about 50 per-
cent of the time, and Owen plays the guitar."
A considerable chunk of the funding for the whole affair
comes from the Guinness people of Guinness Stout, Harp
Beer and Bass Ale fame. The cash bar will sell nothing outside
of those varieties, but Siglin stressed that the grant was on
act of support for the arts and not a promotion.
He said, "The grant is not to sell their beer, the grant is to
put on the show. They'd have given us the grant even if we
didn't sell their beer."
The future of the Ark in general is still very much up in the
air, but events like the pub sing and folk festival remain vital
to its existence. Without a big pair of evenings, it could end
up struggling to pay the rent.
Admission for either night is $5. The shows begin at 8 p.m.
and run until 11: 30.
