Page 18 - The Michigan Daily, Thursday, May 12, 1983 Softballers By JIM DAVIS It happened again. All season, the Wolverine softball team has had difficulty sweeping both games in a doubleheader. Tuesday was no dif- ferent. THIS TIME MICHIGAN divided with Western Michigan, marking the seventh consecutive twinbill the Wolverines have split. The Broncos took the opener, 2-0. Michigan cap- tured game two, 4-0. With the split, the softballers close the season at 32-27 overall and 9-15 in the Big Ten. The Broncos, who finished second in the Mid-American Conference Tournament last week, ended at 24-11. Jan Boyd pitched both games for Michigan. The senior hurler, making her final appearance in a Maize and Blue jer- sey, gave up only two runs, ten hits and two walks on the day, but got no run support in game one. Her record stands at 16-14. The win total is a new single-season Michigan record, and Boyd's 29 career victories is also a new mark. JODY HUMPHRIES continued her hot hitting of late to split pair with pace the Wolverine offense, singling twice in the lidlifter and tripling home a run in the first inning of the second game. The Wolverines were stymied by Bronco pitchers Beth Belleville and Kim Arendson on three hits in the opener, but came out smoking in the nightcap. Mena Reyman reached on a fielder's choice in the first in- ning and hustled around on Humphries' two-out triple to give Michigan the lead for good. Then with two outs in the second, Leslie Bean was hit by a pitch and Karen Pollard singled. Shortstop Lisa Panetta followed with a run-producing single to score Bean, then Missy Thomas smashed another base hit to chase Pollard across the plate. Panetta brought home the third tally of the inning and final run of the game as she scored on a passed ball. Left-fielder Carol Patrick provided the fielding gem of the day in the final inning. Following a triple with one out, the junior gunned down a Bronco runner-who was trying to score on a fly ball-at the plate to preserve the shutout for Boyd and the Wolverines. WMU 4 Patrick ... guns down Bronco 4 Wilcox, Wilson lead Bengals past Oakland By JOE CHAPELLE Specialtothe Daily DETROIT-The Tigers extended their winning streak to three as they downed the Oakland A's, 5-2, before a sparse crowd of 10,772 last night at Tiger Stadium, Starter Milt Wilcox went the distance for Detroit, upping his record to 3-4, while Mike Norris took the loss, drop- ping to 3-3. A LARRY HERNDON walk and a Glenn Wilson home run combined to give the Tigers 2-0 lead in the second. inning. Norris, who had control problems early in the game, walked Herndon to start things off for Detroit. Wilson then stepped to the plate and parked his third homer of the young season in the left-field second deck. Oakland first baseman Kelvin Moore, however, got revenge for the A's in the third, smacking Wilcox's first pitch of the stanza over the right field wall. That made the score 2-1. The Tigers extended their lead to 4-1 in the fifth. Norris hit Detroit center fielder Chet Lemon with a pitch, sen- ding him to first. Tiger first baseman Enos Cabell, the next batter to face the Oakland righthander, knocked in Lemon with a hard-hit triple to left- center field. Shortstop Alan Trammell then laid down a perfect bunt to bring in Cabell, giving the Bengals a 4-1 edge. Oakland narrowed the margin to 4-2 in the top of the sixth. With two outs Wilcox gave up three singles and a walk before Oakland second baseman Davey Lopes bounced into a fielder's choice. Oakland garnered its second run when designated hitter Jeff Burroughs singled Mike Davis home. Detroit came alive again in the seventh, adding another run to make the score 5-2. Wilson started things off by lininga single through the box. After Lemon struck out, Cabell doubled the right fielder home with his second ex- tra-base hit of the evening.
