Awesome.
There is no other way to describe the
offensive display put on by the
Michigan baseball team this weekend
against Michigan State. The
Wolverines hit .458 (55-120) as a team,
swept the four-game series, and clin-
ched the Big Ten East title. Michigan I

Purdue (4-6) must win its remaining six
games in order to bump the Spartans.
Four of those games are against
Michigan. "I'll bet on Michigan,"
Smith said, grinning.
Too bad Smith didn't place any bets
on the high-flying Wolverines this
weekend. Only the first game was
close, with Michigan hanging on to an
11-9 win. The Saturday contest started
out on a bad note for winning pitcher
Dave Kopf. Spartan second baseman
Bruno Petrella led off the State first in-
ning with a towering home run over the
center field fence, awakening a large
home crowd at East Lansing. But an
eight-run Michigan outburst in the four-
th inning quieted the crowd and helped
Kopf pick up his eighth win of the
season against no defeats. Relief ace
Tim Karazim came on in the seventh to
preserve the victory.
The second game at East Lansing's
Kobs Field was much like the first-lots
of homers and another big Blue inning.
Michigan scored' nine times in the
third inning to build an insurmountable
10-1 lead..However, a sudden downpour of
rain in the 6th inning forced the game to
be concluded at Fisher Stadium on
Sunday before the scheduled
doubleheader. Ken Hayward went the

BLUE BANTER: Michigan's in-
credible hitting weekend raised their
team average to .334, .370 in Big Ten
play ...
Here's the individual rundown for the
hitting stars of the series:
* Chris Sabo ... 8-15, three HR's, one
2B, one 3B, eight RBI's. -
* Barry Larkin... 8-14, two HR's,
six RBI's.
* Mike Watters... 8-15, one 3B, one
2B, six runs scored.
* Fred Erdmann ... 6-11, two HR's,
six RBI's.
" Jeff Jacobson ... 6-14, six RBI's.
" Rich Bair ... 6-10, one HR, one 2B,
4 RBI's ...
Why were there so many home runs
on Saturday? Maybe the fact that its
only 301 feet down the right field line at
Kobs Field has something to do with it.
No wonder Kirk Gibson hit so many
home runs there ...
