The Michigan Daily - Saturday, August 13, 1983 - pace 9 -.. A selection of campus film highlights The Michiqan Daily - Saturday, August 13, 1983- Paae 9 The Maltese Falcon (John Huston, 1941) A classic film that gets better with each viewing. Huston's crisp, succinct direction is the perfect counterpoint to Dashiell Hammett's mystery, while the cast is pure magnificence. Hum- phrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Sidney Greenstreet, and Peter Lorre give their all in the search for the black bird. (Saturday, August 13; Lorch Hall, 9:45). movie as was ever made. Eraserhead's twisted imagery both demands and defies explanation. You'll need at least three viewings before the plot begins to make any sense whatsoever. (Saturday, August 13; Michigan Theatre, 7:00,10:10). The Adventures of Robin Hood (Michael Curtiz, William Keighley, 1938) The legendary Robin Hood lives again in the swashbuckling spirit of Errol Flynn. Will the evil Basil Rathbone skewer Robin? Will Claude Rains be crowned king? Will Olivia de Havilland fall for Flynn? Lots of great swordfighting and a good musical score. (Saturday, August 13; Auditorium A, 6:00,9:50). The Seven Samurai (Akira Kurosawa, 1945) Japan not only makes better cars than the U.S., they make better Westerns as well. Seven Samurai is long (over three hours), expansive in scope, im- peccably directed, and one of the few films that deserves to be called an epic. (Saturday, August 20; Lorch Hall, 8:00). The Graduate (Mike Nichols, 1967) For all you summer graduates, a sneak preview of what lies ahead. Dustin Hoffman portrays a college graduate with no plans, who suddenly has an affair with a friend of the family, Anne Bancroft, and her daughter, Katherine Ross. But just when the summer gets interesting, Hoffman and Ross must decide exac- tly what they want out of life. (Satur- day, August 21; Michigan Theatre, 7:00, 11:00). Breaking Away (Peter Yates, 1979) Another film about the decisions to be made after graduation. Delicately written by Stephen Tesich, Breaking Away tells of four friends, recently graduated from high school, waiting for something to happen in the small college town of Bloomington, Indiana. Rivalries with the college students, love affairs, and an exhilirating bicycle race all tend to break up the monotony of life outside of school.
