ARTS Page 8 Saturday, August 13, 1983 The Michigan Daily Jazz: Detroit does it right & 04 By Jim Boyd W HAT'S THAT big lug of a city, Detroit, up to now! I suppose it all started with this "renaissance" thing - beautify, publicize, beautify, publicize - and then came the fab Grand Prix - vroom vroom, publicize - well now they've really done it with the latest Montreux/Detroit Kool Jazz Festival - swing, publicize, bop, publicize. In speaking of the festival, Detroit Renaissance president Robert McCabe said "Detroit speaks to the world, we're telling the rest of the world what we've got here in Detroit." What Detroit has got between August 31 and September 5 is an array of fabulous jazz musicians including Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald Oscar Peterson, and Stan Getz. Whether or not the festival is heard across the ocean in Montreux or Monte Carlo remains to be seen, but it cer- tainly should be heard here in Detroit. Let's face it, this isn't a city of fancy shmancy auto races or fancy shmancy hotels, but it is a city of jazz. This festival is appropriate because Detroit really is a source city of jazz and can be expected to provide and support a festival of these proportions. The Festival consists of 22 ticketed concerts with prices ranging from $4 to $16. What makes the festival even more special are the 78 free concerts being given at Hart Plaza and Grand Circus Park by jazz ensembles from Detroit and by fine national college and high school bands. Some of the festival's more notable performers and events will include: " Ramsey Lewis who has been recor- ding for almost thirty years across a broad spectrum of styles including classical, jazz, contemporary pop, and ethnic styles. His skill on the piano has won him a couple of gold singles and a lot of respect. " Count Basie is approaching his 79th birthday and this pianist has been making great music since the '30s. He is a legendary performer who needs little or no introduction. " Ella Fitzgerald as "the queen of jazz" will exhibit her wonderful Ramsey Lewis, Ella Fitzgerald, and Count Basie are among the stellar per- formers appearing at the Montreux/Detroit Jazz Festival starting August 31. product of 40 years of vocal prowess. This amazing woman has more than 50 records to her credit. - Stan Getz who has illustrated his distinctive style on upwards of 120 albums with artists such as Stan Ken- ton, Jimmy Dorsey, and Woody Her- man, will show why he has been such an influential sound in modern jazz. . Oscar Peterson and his propulsive sense of swing will attempt to please audiences here as he has done all over the world. " "Jazz On Film" a cinematic presen- tation by jazz film collector David Chertok will bring Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker and Billie Holliday back to life through some fabulous footage of some great performances.
