Q: I'm trying to do some research on
the places where I'm applying for jobs.
Where can I find information on them?
A: You can ask the employer to send
you an annual report and some
promotional literature. But probably
most of your efforts will be spent in the
library.
The Career Planning and Placement
CAREERS
library has annual reports, company
literature and information about
government agencies on file. If you pale
at the thought of opening up an annual
report, look at the notebook titled,
Researching the Organization. It has
some articles on how to read and inter-
pret annual reports.
Newspaper and magazine articles
are a vital source of information. In ad-
dition to the obvious advantage of being
much more readable than an annual
report, articles often contain infor-
mation not easily found anywhere else.
The writer has done research for you.
You are getting the distilled results,
usually presented much more objec-
tively than in the chairman of the
board's report to stockholders.
The researcher's tool for finding
those articles is the many indexes that
catalog the contents of newspapers,
magazines, and professional and trade
journals. The Readers' Guide to
Periodical Literature is the best known,
but it is by no means the only one.
The Magazine Index at the Un-
dergraduate Library is a microfilm in-
dex of 360 periodicals. It is an excellent
place to stsrt.
The Educational Resources Infor-
mation Center (ERIC), at the School of
Education, and the social work library
both have some good resources for the
social sciences field. The Graduate
Library has the F & S Index of Corporations
Index and the Education Index.
The Graduate Library also has the
Documents Center, a storehouse of in-
formation put out by the government.
Also a good source of information on
government activities is the law
library, which gets such publications as
the Congressional Quarterly Weekly
Report and the Environment Reporter.
If you are researching an Ann Arbor
area organization, go to the Ann Arbor
Public Library, which has a fine collec-
tion of resources on local businesses.
If you are interested in the private
sector, be sure to spend time at the
business administration library. It has
. all the big directories, such as Standard
and Poor's and Dunn and Bradstreet.
Its indexes include the Wall Street
Journal Index, the New York Times In-
dex, and the F & S Index of corporations
and Industries.
Much more exists at each of these
centers and at other libraries and
resource colections on campus and
around town. Start wherever seems

An Afternoon in the park
Summer days are made for laziness, and not just in Ann Arbor. Even in the busy city of New York, these three find time
to relax in the park.
