SPORTS Page 12 Tuesday, August 2, 1983 The Michigan Daily I Chance wins Sanders Title ' 4 By DAN COVEN Saturday night's championship game of the Sandy Sanders Summer Basket- ball League could have been called "shoot-out at Pioneer Gym," But, for 400-plus fans in the sweltering gym, it was a thrilling evening of street-ball at its finest. In a see-saw battle, regular season favorite The Chance finally edged out Washtenaw PAL 91-90 with three seconds left. PACKING A mean 25-foot jumper, with a seemingly endless clip, ex-Piston Terry Duerod took on The Chance's big guns by scoring a league record 38 poin- ts for PAL. Both teams came out with six-guns blazin' in the first half, as both teams hit their first five shots. Ex-Michigan star Johnny Johnson scored 18 points and Mark Bostic had six dunks to pace The Chance to a 56-42 half-time lead. That lead quickly evaporated in opening minutes of the second half as Richard Rellford, Percy Cooper, and Terry Duerod led PAL on an 18-4 spurt tying the game at 60. With 13 minutes to play, PAL took the lead for the first time as Cooper connected with Rellford for an alley-oop jam, to make it 62-60. When Tarpley failed to score off a brilliant behind-the-head pass from Thad Garner, Cooper grabbed the rebound and headed down court. Cooper then heaved the ball from cen- ter-court toward the basket intending another alley-ooo for Rellford. Though the pass was too high and behind, the "Riviera Flash" briefly defied gravity by plucking the ball out of the air behind him with one hand and slammed it home in one motion to the delight of the cheering crowd. BEHIND more 25 and 30-foot bombs from . Duerod and aggressive inside play by Rellford PAL boosted its lead to 77-71. Then, as so many times before, Tar- pley took control of the game by rejec- ting three consecutive shots and scoring six out of The Chance's next 11 points, with the momentum back in The Chance's favor, Tarpley and company trimmed PAL's lead to two, at 84-82. Tarpley, not known for his outside shooting, then hita jumper from the top of the key to tie it up at the two minute mark. After some persevering inside baskets by Garner, The Chance led 90- 86. PAL turned again to Duerod, who, though double-teamed sank a 30-foot jumper and then with 9 seconds left, a spectacular fall-away rainbow from the baseline to tie the game at 90. Bostic then took the inbounds pass for The Chance and drove straight to the hoop and was fouled. With three seconds remaining, Bostic went to the line and missed the first shot. PAL then called time out to heighten the pressure on Bostic. With a sigh of relief, Bostic sank the second shot. Wilbur McCormick's desperation jumper for PAL bounced off the rim at the buzzer. ~Duerod led all scorers with 38 points - on 19 of 29 shooting. Rellford added 18, Johnny Johnson led The Chance with 26 points, league MVP Tarpley added 25 points and four blocks, Mark Bostic scored 22 including eight dunks, and Thad Garner tallied 16 with eight assists. In the consolation game, Stein & Goetz defeated Franklin-Wright 57-55. 4 S4 Daily Photo by DOUG McMAHON. The traffic underneath the rim in Sandy Sanders action seems to need a traf- fic light.
