Carter ke- to
Panther success
DENVER (AP )- Philadelphia
Coach Jim Mora says his team must
keep Michigan's star receiver Anthony
Carter from making the big play in the
inaugural United States Football
League championship game Sunday
night.
Sunday's game in Mile High Stadium
will be the second meeting between
the Panthers and the Stars this year.
However, the resurgent Panthers have
reeled off five successive victories and'
won theCentral Division championship
since dropping a 29-20 decision to the
Stars during the regular season.
THE STARS, who had the Eastern
Division title virtually wrapped up, lost,
two of their last six regular season
games. However, any thoughts of a
late-season letdown went out the win-
dow when the Stars came back with a
stunning fictory over wild card Chicago
- scoring 21 points in the last 13 minutes
before winning it in overtime on Kelvin
Bryant's touchdown.
Michigan which stumbled to a 1-4
start, now is finished at 12-6 while
Philadelphia was 15-3.
"I think we're both good teams,"
Michigan Coach Jim Stanley said. "It
doesn't matter how you start a race.
It's how you finish that counts."
Stanley said his main objective this
week was to keep the Panthers relaxed
- the way they have been during the
streak that made them the hottest team
in the USFL.
"I think they're loose," Stanley said.
"But, that's by design. I want them that
way. I don't want a carnival like at-
mosphere, but I don't want them up-
tight either.
