Army
fears six
dead in
helicopter
crash
SOUTH FOX ISLAND, (UPI) - Ar-
my officials said yesterday there was
"no indication of survivors" in the
crash of a,101st Airborne Division CH-47
Chinook helicopter with six men aboard
on a small island in northern Lake
Michigan.
The accident occurred just before
midnight Sunday in a heavily wooded
area off of the tiny island, which is
located about 45 miles northwest of
Traverse City.
A team of U.S. Army investigators
arrived in northern Michigan yesterday
to inspect the fatal crash.
The three-man team from the U.S.
Army Safety Center in Fort Rucker,
Ala., was to inspect and photograph the
accident site before bodies of the ac-
cident victims would be taken to a U.S.
Coast Guard station at Traverse City
for identification, said Maj. Bill
Mulvey.
There was no record of any emergen-
cy radio calls for help from the helicop-
ter, he said.
The aircraft was not scheduled to
land on the island, he said.
