Enos Cahell walked and Lance p Parrish singled one out later to set the stage for Wockenfuss. The Tiger cat- cher jolted an 0-2 delivery from loser Steve Baker. Left fielder Ricky Hen- derson took two steps back and then watched as the ball sailed into the up- per deck; delighting a near-capacity crowd. THE GAME was not over yet, however, as the A's loaded the bases with two out on reliever and winnner Doug Bair. Aurelio "Smoke" Lopez took over and struck out Carney Lan- sford to end the game. The Tiger reliever Dicked uo his 12th save. igers The A's Henderson nearly stole the game from Detroit. His legs gave the A's their only two runs. In the fifth he walked, stole second, went to third on an overthrow and scored on former Tiger Rick Peters' single. In the seventh Henderson was hit by a pitch, putting A's on first and second. A's catcher Mike Heath conveniently got picked off second, allowing Hender- son to steal second and third. The fleet- footed outfielder then scored on a Peters' suicide squeeze bunt. Until Wockenfuss' game-winning clout, the only excitement on the Tiger's side was Larry Herndon's first inning triple. Herndon's triple was his seventh of the year, the most in the American league. THE TIGERS looked like they were still on their all-star break for the first 7% innings. A's starter Tim Conroy and ex-Tiger Baker struck out eight Tigers, while the Bengals ran sluggishly on the bases. In the fifth Cabell rounded first on a bloop-single and was caught in a run- down for the easy out. A seventh-inning sacrifice bunt attempt was foiled when Tom Brookens bunted one straight back to the pitcher who tossed to second for the easy force. The A's were victims of their own aggressive base running as well, stealing six bases, forcing two throwing errors, but also getting nailed four times trying for the extra base. Last night's game was also marked by the appearance of the San Diego Chicken. He entered intthe second in- ning and did his best to keep the crowd entertained until the Tigers could put some offense together. Bair, recently acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals, went 1% innings to pick up his second win as a Tiger. An article in The Sporting News 1913 top poll College Football Yearbook sighted a light schedule, excellent recruiting and great depth as the reasons for Notre Dame's selection. The same article admitted that the choice is an ''emotion-stirring longshot." Other Big Ten schools in the top 20 are Iowa in the number 10 spot, Ohio State at number 17, and Illinois at num- ber 20.
