Orioles all to last-place Seattle

BALTIMORE (AP) - Jim Beattie,
aided by three double plays, allowed
four hits and pitched the Seattle
Mariners to a 3-0 victory over the
Baltimore Orioles last night.
Beattie, 7-5, issued three walks and
struck out two while hurling his second
complete game in 14 starts.
The Orioles and one baserunner in
each of the first three innings on two
walks and an error but each time a
ground ball double play ended the in-
ning.
RICH DAUER singled with one out in
the fourth for Baltimore's first hit and
Cal Ripken followed with another
single. Beattie then retired Eddie
Murray and John Lowenstein on fly
balls.

Wildness by loser Storm Davis, 6-4,
contributed to two of Seattle's runs as
his personal three-game winning streak
came to an end. Richie Zisk opened the
Seattle fourth with a single and was
forced by Pat Putnam. After Putnam
reached second on a hit-and-run groun-
der by Al Cowens, Jamie Allen walked.

Dempsey, but Cruz failed to handle the
throw on the close play. Rick Sweet then
drew a walk, forcing in the game's first
run.
A single by Putnam, a wild pitch and'
a single by Cowens made it 2-0 in the
sixth. Seattle added a run in the eighth
on a double by Zisk and a single by Put-
nam, which scored pinch runner John
Moses.
Coach Chuck Cottier managed the
Mariners in the absence of Del Cran-
dall, who was attending his son's wed-
ding in California. The Orioles, who
began play one game behind first place
Toronto in the American League East,
have lost 11 of their last 16 games.
Reds 3, Phillies 1
CINCINNATI (AP) - Dann Bilar-
dello drove in the go-ahead run with an
infield single and Nick Esasky added a
homerun last night, powering the Cin-
cinnati Reds to a 3-1 victory over the
Philadelphia Phillies.
Bilardello topped a high-hop single
with the bases loaded in the fourth to
put the Reds ahead 2-1, and Esasky
rapped a solo homer, his fourth, in the
sixth off John Denny, 6-5.
REDS starter Joe Price, 7-5, scat-
tered 10 hits in 8 1-3 innings, walking
one and striking out two. Reliever Ben
Hayes and Bill Scherrer finished up,
with the latter posting his sixth save.
The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the
fourth when Von Hayes doubled, Kiko
Garcia singled and Ivan DeJesus hit a
sacrifice fly.
Cincinnati grabbed the lead with a
pair of runs in the fourth. Gary Redus
drew a leadoff walk and took third when
Dan Driessen singled for the second
time in the game. Redus scored when
Ron Oester hit into a fielder's choice,
forcing Driessen at second.
Esasky then lined a single off third
baseman Mike Schmidt's glove, sen-
ding Oester to second, and Denny threw
wildly on a pickoff attempt to move the
runners to second and third. Paul
Householder walked to load the bases
before Bilardello's infield hit scored
Oester.
PONTIAC (AP) - Veteran defensive
end Dave Pureifory and running back
Ken Callicutt were released by the
Detroit Lions yesterday after they
failed pre-training camp physicals, a
spokesman for the National Football
League club said yesterday.
Pureifory and Callicutt both suffered
knee injuries last season, and failed the
examinations because of those injuries,
said Lions' spokesman Brian Muir.

Pureifory played 11 NFL seasons after
being drafted by Green Bay in 1972 out
of Eastern Michigan University. He

Angels 9, Red Sox 3
BOSTON (AP) - Rod Carew and Rick
Burleson drove in three runs apiece last
night to lead the California Angels to a
9-3 pasteing of the Boston Red Sox.
The Red Sox had runners in scoring
position in six of the first seven innings
buthwinner Bruce Kison,1-2, escaped
each time and blanked the Red Sox un-
til Carl Yastrzemski hit a two-run
homer in the eighth, his third of the
season and 445th of his career. Kison
was tagged for 13 hits in 8/3 innings.
THE ANGELS had a four-run third
inning off Dennis Eckersley, 5-6, and a
five-run outburst against him and two
relievers in the eighth.
Bobby Grich led off the third with a
single and went to third on Bob Boone's
one-out single. Carew's ground-rule
double made it 1-0. Burleson, who ad-
ded two doubles, followed with a two-
run single and took second on the throw
to the plate. Ellis Valentine tripled
home the fourth run.
Reggie Jackson, playing for the first
time since June 22 when he suffered
bruised ribs crashing into a wall in
Texas, started the Angels' eighth with
an infield hit and continued to second on
a throwing error by second baseman
Jerry Remy. Grich singled Jackson
home before singles by TimFoli and
Boone loaded the bases.
Carew singled to drive in two runs
and he went all the way to third while
Boone scored on center fielder Tony
Armas' wild throw to third. Burleson's
sacrifice fly accounted for the final run.
Carew had two singles in four at-bats,
raising his batting average one point to
.403.
Blue Jays 8, Rangers 5
TORONTO (AP) - Willie Upshaw
slammed a three-run homer and scored
three times to lead the Toronto Blue
Jays to an 8-5 victory over the Texas
Rangers last night in the opener of a
three-game series between the
American League division leaders.

After Damaso Garcia singled and
Garth Iorg walked to lead off the fourth
inning, Upshaw drilled the first pitch
over the right field fence to give the
Blue Jays an 8-3 lead. It was Upshaw's
16th homer of the season and increased
his RBI total to51.
Jim Clancy, 8-5, held the Rangers to
five hits before being relieved by Randy
Moffitt in the seventh. It was Clancy's
third consecutive victory. Toronto took
a 5-3 lead in the third inning with three
runs to chase Texas starter Danny
Darwin, 7-7. Rance Mulliniks doubled,
moved to third on a single by Upshaw
and scored on a wild pitch by Darwin.
