Special to the Daily The Michigan softball team finally got to play yesterday, but not against the scheduled opponent and now without a lit- tle rain. The squad was scheduled to play a doubleheader at Detroit, but when the Titans cancelled due to poor field conditions, s u a d g sWolverine coach Bob DeCarolis arranged a single game againat Eaatern Michigan on the Hurons' home field. 'M' pitching ace Stoll Michig out at least 3 weeks T cMichigan Daily Thursday, Miy 5-198: Pdg27 THE MICHIGAN hitters supported the fine pitching effort by tallying two runs in each of the first two innings, another run in the fourth, and five more in the sixth. Seven Wolverine hitters knocked in at least one run apiece. Carol Patrick and Missy Thomas each notched three hits in five plate appearances for Michigan. Patrick and freshman Leslie Bean knocked in a pair of runs apiece, while Thomas, Penny Neer, Mena Reyman, Lisa Panetta, and Taylor knocked in one each. DeCarolis was quietly pleased with the day's work. "Three good things happened today," said the third-year coact after the game. "We got to play, the sun was shining, and we won." The Wolverines close out the home season this weekend against Big Ten arch-rival Ohio State in a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday at the Varsity Sof- tball Diamond. Next on the agenda, though, is another doubleheader today, scheduled at Michigan State. The Wolverines and Spartans split a pair at East Lansing on April 21st in their fir- st meeting. Game time is 3:00. an Baseball Statistics Hitting By PAUL HELGREN Michigan pitching ace Rich Stoll will be out for at least three weeks after he injured his pitching hand in a game against Ohio State last week. The junior right-hander suffered a bone chip in his thumb after fielding a one-hopper back to the box. Stoll was cautiously optimistic that the cast on his hand would be removed and he could pitch in the Big Ten tour- nament in three weeka. "MAYBE I'LL BE ready for the Big Ten's," Stoll said . "If not, I'm hopeful that I can pitch in the NCAA's. I'm not really expecting anything good, though" Michigan coach Bud Middaugh was philosophic about the loss of his best hurler. "Injuries are a part of the game," the Wolverine skipper said. "We don't want to use it as an out. If we lose the Big Ten it will be because the guys on the field lost, not because of injuries." MIDDAUGH also said he is doubtful whether Stoll will be able to pitch again this season. "Right now we're looking at (Stoll being out) the rest of the season. I'll listen to what the doctors say and make the decision from there. I know Rich would like to pitch right now with the cast on. But if there is any doubt at all as to the condition of his hand, he will not pitch." The injury was especially costly because Stoll (7-2, 3.28 ERA) was star- ting to pitch with authority after struggling just a bit earlier in the aeaaon. STOLL'S PLACE in the starting rotation will be assumed by junior Bill Shuta (3-0, 4.68). Shuta was very effec- tive against Adrian on Tuesday, giving up no hits in five innings. But he also has had problems with control, walking 16 batters in 171/s innings this season. "You just don't fill the gap left by your best pitcher," Middaugh said. "But I have confidence in Bill Shuta. He threw harder (Tuesday) than he has all year." Name, Pos. Ken Hayward, 1B.............. Dan Disher, P-OF ............. Rich Bair, C ..................
