The American public can learn a valuable lesson from Thatcher's re-election, that women are quite capable of competent and strong political leadership. In Thatcher's case, she has lead her country during difficult times, both at home and abroad. So far, she has brought peace and legal independence to Zimbabwe, successfully dealt with the Argentine invaders of the Falklands, t and reduced inflation from 22 to five percent. Admittedly, Thatcher's achievements have not come without some high costs. The hun- dreds of young men killed in the Falklands and an unemployment rate of 13 percent, for exam- ple, are evidence of that. We certainly don't approve of everything Thatcher has done, but whatever one's political ideology, no one can argue that she hasn't been a strong, capable leader of both her Conser- vative Party and her country. Moreover, she has always been honest with the British public and has stuck to most of her campaign promises, a feat few American politicians manage to do. America has had its share of successful women leaders, but unfortunately, even today when we think of presidents and presidential candidates we tend to think of men. With the 1984 presidential election fast approaching, lit- tle chance exists that things will be any dif- ferent then. Governor James Blanchard's selection of Martha Griffiths last year as his running mate was a big step in the right direction, and hopefully caused some of our national political leaders to see the light. Perhaps the next step is a woman governor, and ultimately a woman president. Until then, women will continue to be underrepresented in Washington, and the country as a whole will be deprived of a large number of qualified women candidates.
