A loss would eliminate the Wolverines from college baseball's national championship series. Texas, which entered the game un- defeated in Series play, would remain alive even if Michigan won. The winner plays Alabama, which beat Arizona Sstate 6-0 last night, tonight at 8:10 p.m. EDT. MICHIGAN pitcher Scott Kamieniecki's wildness got him into trouble in the fifth. One-out walks to Mike Trent and Bryan Burrows were followed by a Bill Bates single to load the bases. Brumley promptly knocked Kamieniecki out of the game with a grand slam home run. CaseyClose relieved Kamieniecki and walked the first batter he faced but the freshman righthander avoided further trouble by getting Tolentino to ground into a double play. The Wolverines got through to Texas in the fifth when Jeff Jacobson followed Ken Hayward's double with an RBI single to center. Jacobson took second on the throw. Fred Erdmann popped up attempting to bunt and Chuck Froning lined out before Rich Bair knocked in Jacobson with an infield single. It appeared Texas shortstop Mike Brumley's throw would get Jacoson but it went wild, allowing the Wolverine second baseman to score and Bair to move to second. Dale Sklar grounded to end the inning. KAMIENIECKI avoided trouble through the first four innings. In the second, Jose Tolentino led off with a grounder that Michigan shortstop Barry Larkin booted but Tolentino stumbled out in the batter's box, enabling Larkin to make the play. Jeff Hearron followed with a sharp single to left but was picked off first by catcher Rich Bair. Kamieniecki walked the next batter but got out of trouble when Johnny Sutton grounded out. Tonight Alabma will play the winner of the Texas- Michigan game, which was played late last night. The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when Alabama blew it open with a five-run barrage. The big blow is that inning was a three- run homer by catcher Frank Velleggia. ARIZONA State's lone hit came in the seventh inning when pinch hitter Lou Kent lined a single to right. Meacham picked up the win for the Tide, his seventh on the season and second of the series. Dunn was pulled in the fifth inning after walking eight Arizona State batters and striking out seven. - PAUL HELGREN I I Close ...ices victory with slam
