THE RAMONES, along with local band
the Cult Heroes, play at Second
Chance this Sunday night.
So the thing to do is to question the
existence of mankind on the earth
anyway. If one sits back and wonders
about it, they soon discover that man
has no purpose at all - in the end, he
will die. In this way man's existence is
sort of stupid in a way. Stupidity is a
very concrete yet nebulous concept: is
that which has no purpose stupid?
If one sits back and wonders about it,
the Ramones have no purpose. Back
around the mid to midlate '70s, the
group formed and started pushing out
their vision version of yankin' and
crankin' no doubt influencing the so
called punk bit. Well, its like the '80s,
and them Ramones still be putting out
pretty much the same "I know less
chords than you" stylee Beach Boys eat
pizza pop rocks. And they still use the
same lineup (except for a few per-
cussive permutations) that they started

<tTEY, BEAV, wanna go to the
movies Saturday?"
"No, I don't think so Whitey. I'm
going to go with Wally and the older
guys to Joe's Star Lounge Saturday af-
ternoon."
"But Beaver,Joe's Star Lounge is a
bar. Bars are for grown-ups. Is your
mom letting you go?"
"Oh, sure Whitey. There's going to be
a special show, for kids and everybody.
There's going to be four bands. Some of
the guys in the bands are even friends
of that creepy Eddie Haskell."
"Wow. Going to a bar where there's
going to be live bands. What kind of
bands are they?"
"Oh, you know. I guess you could call
it hardcore. Real loud and real fast. It's
a lot of fun and you can even go dance
with all the other guys and not be called
a sissy or nothing."
"That sounds really keen. Say, what
are these bands names?"
"Well, uh the biggest band is called
the Necros, they're from Maumee,
Ohio, like on the way to Cedar Point.
They've had a couple records, and even
a big album that's coming out real soon.
They've toured around the country,
too."
"Sounds like they're a bunch of real
famous guys, Beav."
"Yeah, they're kinda well known.
Then there's some bands from right
here in Ann Arbor. The State is like Ann
Arbor's best hardcore band. They're
going to have a record out sometime
this summer, too."
"Hey, they sound pretty good."
"Yeah, they are. They even used to
have a place called the State House
where bands could play and kids like

with. So in this way, the Ramones
really haven't done anything.
So what it comes down to is are the
Ramones really stupid? The answer is
twofold. Yes. and No. First let's look at
the yes. They haven't really progressed
and sophisto-ed their music up to high
tech electronic beat it disco drivel. The
songs are, on the surface, pretty sim-
plistic exercises in melody (always a
question mark). And as far as a
profound Ezra Pound statements, they
are fairly few and far between.
But there is intelligence in stupidity,
and therefore we put forth the
argument that the Ramones really are
not so stupid because they have a pur-
pose. See without things like the
Ramones, mankind gets so involved in
whether or not it has a purpose that it
forgets, as Richard Pryor once put it,
that we still eat, piss, screw, and shit
like dogs. To be honest, we're really
only beasts anyway. Which in a way, is
why people like the Ramones are really
smart, i.e., they realize that we really
ain't so great as we think (we being
mankind) and that physical stimulation
is pretty much our prime motivation.
But remember, the Ramones are smar-
ter than the rest of us because A) they
know this, and B) we buy their albums.
So the question is now, if- we are
stupid to begin with, why compound the
fact by being even more stupid and
listen to this crap? Well, it could be so
that we, too, want to analyze the
phenomenon of man's inherent
stupidity. But it's not that, because we
are too stupid to think of such a thing.
