criticized those coaches that failed to
put Sabo on their All-American team.
The All-American team, which was
chosen by the American Baseball
Coaches Association, included
Wolverine pitcher Stoll but not Sabo.
"Hey, how the heck do you leave Sabo
off the All-American team?" Winkin
asked rhetorically. "It's unbelievable
to me. There's one of the great players.
Sabo did everything that had to be done
today. He was All-American today.
WHILE SABO PLAYED like an All-
American, Stoll was not particularly ef-
fective. He did manage to last seven in-
nings to pick up his 11th win against two
defeats. Junior Dave Kopf went the last
one and one-third innings to pick up his
second save. Swift, also named to the
All-American second team, saw his
record drop to 9-3.
Maine opened the scoring in the
second inning when Brad Colton led off
with is 10th home run of the season.

WHOEVER starts will have the unenviable privilege of
facing the Alabama phenom- Magadan.
"I don't want to brag but I feel I can hit the ball real well,"
Magadan said after Alabama's 6-5, 11-inning victory over
Arizona State Saturday night.
How well? How about 5-5 with two RBIs against the Sun
Devils to raise his average to an NCAA-leading .535.
MAGADAN DOES not hit many home runs (eight in 202 at
bats this year) but he's second in the nation in doubles with 30
and also has 92 RBIs and a .838 slugging percentage in 52
games. In short, the 6-3, 185-pound lefty can hita ton.
Michigan will be happy if it can hold Magadan to a couple
of hits. Believe it or not Arizona State coach Jim Brock was
happy holding him to 5-5.
"We did what we had to do against Magadan," Brock said.
"We managed to keep him from getting any extra base hits."
ALABAMA has a few other big sticks in its lineup besides
Magadan. The Tide banged out 13 safeties against Arizona
State, including three by center fielder Allan Stallings. Other
top hitters on the club are designated hitter Ted McClendon
(.376 going into the Series) and left-fielder Rob Skates (.363
with 61 RBIs).
Alabama, which is making its first College World Series
appearance since 1950, jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first in-
ning against ASU. But the Sun Devils came roaring back with
four runs in the fifth, sending starter Dean Hayes to the
showers.
After Alabama scored twice in its half of the fifth, Arizona
State tied the score at five in the eighth. Neither team could
score in the ninth, forcing the game into extra innings.
THE TIDE won the game in the 11th when Sun Devil second
baseman Greg Steen bobbled a two-
out grounder off the bat of Craig Shirley, scoring teammate
Frank Velleggia.
Barry Shollenberger, Alabama's fourth-year coach, is ex-
pected to send lefthander Rick Browne to the mound against
the Wolverines. Browne is 10-1 on the season with a 3.52 ear-
ned run average.
If Browne is to stop the Wolverines he will have to stop
Chris Sabo. The junior third baseman went 3-4 with four RBIs
against Maine on Saturday, including a three-run homer.
BLUE BANTER: Who is the best clutch hitter on the
Michigan baseball team? It could very well be senior second
baseman Jeff Jacobson, who has a clutch hitting percentage
of .778. The percentage measures a player's ability to move
baserunners in scoring position with less than two out, and
also two-out RBIs. Surprisingly, Michigan's leading hitter,
Sabo, is last on the team with a .492 percentage.
