Page 18- The Michigan Daily - Thursday, May 5, 1983 re Panelears student aid concerns By JACKIE YOUNG Students who fear federal cuts in student aid might force them to leave the University testified before representatives from Washington in late April at hearings sponsored by the Michigan Student Assembly. Fewer than 10 students testified to a four-member panel, which included Ron Jursa from the Department of Education and Janice Fine, president of the United States Student Association. THE STUDENTS' testimony will be used in a report to the federal gover- nment to evaluate student aid programs, Fine said. The results from the report will be used by the Depar- tment of Education this summer to restructure federal financial aid programs. Despite the small number of students at the hearings, those who testified criticized the federal government for frequent changes in eligibility requirements. They also said that proposals to cut funding for student aid in the past two years has made it difficult to rely on federal money. "(FINANCIAL AID) is effecting all aspects of a student's life," said Sharon Jordan, a student advisor in the University's financial aid office. Students spent time worrying if money will be available, which interferes with studying, she said. Jursa said students shouldn't "give up without a fight," and look for alter- natives, such as private loans or scholarships, to replace federal funds. University students who receive financial aid depend heavily on federal funds, said Harvey Grotrian, the University's financial aid director. Cuts in federal funding could force many students to halt their education and eventually make it impossible for students from low and middle income families to come to the University, Grotrian said. 4 4 FI I PHARMACISTS Paid Relocation Expenses ... and 100% tuition reimbursement await you at SwedishAmerican!
