Page 10 -The Michigan Daily- Thursday, June 2, 1983 Lucas does it again with 'Jedi' 4 By Richard Campbell Return or the Jedi Starring: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, and Anthony Daniels Directed by: Richard Marquand Now playing at the Campus Theater IGNORE THE lingering minor crit- icisms that follow. The simple truth is that George Lucas has done it again. Return of the Jedi is a marvelous amalgamation of fantasy, magic, and myth all wrapped up in a blinking, quirky galaxy of imagination. Making any multi-million dollar special-effects laden motion picture is an overwhelming task. Lucas has tem- pted the critical and financial fates three times, putting together space ad- ventures that succeed largely on their own merits but achieve a much greater INDIVIDUALTHEATRES . hAweof liberty 761-9700 $2.00 WED, SAT, SUN SHOWS BEFORE 6:00 p.m. ENDS TONIGHT! ! As with the other entries, Return of the Jedi begins with a bang and finishes with a flourish. The introductory notes tell us that Han Solo still rests in the clutches of the vile gangster Jabba the Hut while the evil Galactic Empire is in the midst of constructing a new Death Star, more powerful than the one blown to bits in the first movie. In the opening scenes, director Richard Marquand sets the frenetic pace that will characterize the film as he assembles all the regulars on the desert planet Tatooine, readying them- selves to free Solo. The various beasts exude nastiness and the entire rescue bristles with the kind of energy you ex- pect from adventure films. But at times this whole sequence seems to be nothing more than a preface to the rest of the film and should therefore have been shorter and less extravagant. At one point, Luke must escape from a strange beast called the Rancor, only to then find himself having to escape from another creature, the Saarlac, in the next scene. While two escapes for the price of one is great, it tends to geta lit- tle repetitious in a film filled with -escapes. The main story of Jedi concerns the Rebels last ditch assault on the Em- pire's new Death Star. In order to finally crush the bad guys, Solo, Skywalker, and Leia travel to the forest moon Endor, with the mission of destroying the battlestation's energy shield, produced on the planetoid. Once down there, our heroes are quickly engaged in a classic chase sequence against Imperial stor- mtroopers fleeing on flying motor- cycles. With the aid of many unseen hands at the special effects shop, the audience is whisked at dizzying speeds Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) contemplates the many mysteries of the force and battles Darth Vader, while Han Solo (Harrison Ford) blasts away and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) quiets C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) in scenes from 'Return of the Jedi.' 4 through a redwood forest narrowly missing trunks and swooping under fallen trees. There are many more episodes and brushes with death in Jedi, but most important, all those dramatic questions are answered. Luke finds out his true parentage and in the culminating scenes of the trilogy, amidst cross- cutting between the battle on Endor and a space attack on the Death Star, is for- ced to meet with his destiny. Throughout all the laser blasts and the flying spaceships, the acting con- tinues to improve. As the young Jedi who must personally conquer evil, Mark Hamill fleshes out his farm boy naivete with increasing sophistication. Harrison Ford returns to his happy-go- lucky scoundrel character and keeps things interesting with his swash- buckling style. Often overlooked, Anthony Daniels' C3PO is a master of dialogue.
