The Michigan Daily -Thursday; May 26,1983- Page 5 'U' prof. awarded national science honor By HALLE CZECHOWSKI Chemical Engineering Professor Emeritus Donald Katz was one of 11 scientists awarded the National Medal of Science at the White House in Washington Tuesday. Katz is the fourth researcher from the University to receive the medal, which is the federal government's highest award recognizing those who have made outstanding contributions to physical, biological, mathematical, or engineering sciences. "I THINK IT'S a nice kind of ending of that part of one's career," said Katz yesterday. Katz is best known for his work aiding the petroleum industry, and pioneered procedures for extracting, producing, transporting, and storing natural gas and petroleum. He has taught in the College of Engineering since 1936, after receiving both a bachelot and doctorate from the University in 1933. He also served as department head of the former chemical and metallurgical engineering department for 11 years. In addition to his engineering work, Katz has written books on his family geneology and the history of Waterloo, Michigan, for which he received a Merit Award from the Michigan Historical Society. The chemical engineering depar- tment has awarded a lecture in Katz's name each year since 1971 to a distinguished researcher in the field of chemical engineering and petroleum 1technology. Katz is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and holds 17 principal honors and awards. Correction The Daily incorrectly reported Tues- day that AFSCME dues would be $11.80 if University clericals vote to accept the union. The amount of union dues would not be decided until a contract is accep- ted by union members. 764-0558 1 Engineering Prof. Donald Katz holds the national Medal of Science which he was awarded in Washington Tuesday for his work in chemical enginnering.
