Lou Whitaker led off with a single, followed by a flyout by Kirk Gibson, a walk to Larry Herndon, a strikeout by Lance Parrish and another freebie to John Grubb to load the bases. Glenn Wilson then grounded out to Ranger shortstop Bucky Dent to end the inning. About this time, the game had all the excitementof a blood drive.
