Thousands of U of M professional, skilled trades and service em- ployees are currently protected by negotiated contracts with Univer- sity administration. They've gained dignity, effective grievance procedures, job security provisions, bonus pay for years worked, bet- ter pay and benefits, and respect for their professionalism. These benefits, monetary and non-monetary, are not offered to secretaries and clericals. Not yet. U of M's clericals and secretaries have no union representation and so the Administration is not under any obligation to give them more than necessary. Soon, however, U of M's clericals and secretaries will have the chance to change that situation. Next week they'll have the oppor- tunity to vote for a union in a secret-ballot election. Once they gain a union, they'll also gain the right to negotiate a contract with the University. The union they'll be voting for is AFSCME-a specialized union just for employees of public institutions like U of M. AFSCME represents professionals, technicals, and white- and blue-collar employees in universities, hospitals, governments and non-profit agencies across the country. Over 250,000 of their one million members are clericals and secretaries. So AFSCME speaks with authority and knowledge when it comes to the needs of office staff. That's different from any other union in the country! Clericals and secretaries -this is your best chance to put yourself in the collective bargaining picture. You, too, can gain the many im- provements which other U of M employees take as a matter of course. ON MAY 24th, 25th, and 26th, SAY YES TO AFSCME!
