Falcons skip meeting
T y to display solidarity

ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta
Falcons boycotted an annual National
Football League security meeting
yesterday ina solidarity stance to prod
negotiations for a collective bargaining
agreement.
The NFL Players Association had
asked teams to make solidarity
gestures, but Falcons center Jeff Van
Note, who is vice-president of the
association, said the boycott idea came
from within the Falcons.
VAN NOTE AND Falcons player
representative Mike Kenn, a former
Michigan All-American, informed
Coach Leeman Bennett of their inten-
tions earlier in the week.
"The meeting had nothing to do with
football," said Van Note. "And it has
nothing to do with the Atlanta Falcons,
This is an NFL meeting and right now it
is the subject of collective bargaining
agreement and there is no bargaining
agreement."
The NFL annually sends security
personnel to meet with players to
discuss gambling, drug use and other
legal matters. Two officials: Warren
Welsh and Charlie Jackson, arrived for
yesterday's meeting.
Bennett said the players will be fined
for missing the meeting. -
Saints' Wilson out
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Dave
Wilson, heir-apparent to Archie Man-
ning as the New Orleans Saints' star-
ting quarterback, will sit out the 1982
season following surgery yesterday to
repair a damaged ligament in his left
knee, the National Football League
team an iunced. .-

Wilson, in his second year as a pro,
injured his knee in the first quarter of
the Saints' 22-20 exhibition loss Thur-
sday night to the Houston Oilers. It was
the first 1982 NFL preseason game for
both teams.
A SAINTS spokesman quoted the
team doctor, Dr. Kenneth Saer, as
saying Wilson "tolerated the surgery well
and they had a good repair on his knee."
Saer diagnosed the injury and headed
the team of orthopedic surgeons who
performed the operation at Southern
Baptist Hospital.
"Wilson is in a full leg cast and the
bottom line is tht he is out for the
season," said team spokesman Greg
Suit.

in 22 games with the Clippers, was ex-
pected to join the team immediately.

These are the last Daily sports pages of the summer, but they'll reappear in'
less than a month. On September 11, the Daily will begin the most complete
coverage of Michigan football with its annual "Kickoff" supplement, which
will be distributed before the Wolverines' home opener against Wisconsin.
