Page 2-Saturday, August 14, 1982-The Michigan Daily Anti-draft group plans weekend petition drive By FANNIE WEINSTEIN To protest the legal action currently being taken against non-registrants, members of the Washtenaw County Committee Against Registration and the Draft (W-CARD) will gather at the Federal Building Plaza today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to circulate pamphlets and petitions. "We're simply going to be handing out leaflets urging that the indictments of young men stop, that prosecution stop, and that draft registration is repealed," said W-CARD member Edith Hef ley. ACCORDING to Hefley, the petitions will be forwarded to the national CARD office in Washington D.C. and copies will, also be sent to Congressmen Carl Pursell (R-Ann Arbor) and William Ford (D-Wayne). "We're still an ad-hoc group," Hefley said of the three-year-old coalition. Ac- cording to Hefley, the committee is composed of members of groups such as the American Friends Service Committee, the American Civil Liber- ties Union, and the Interfaith Council for Peace. Volunteers from the Guild House, the First Unitarian Church, and the National Lawyers Guild have also worked with the committee, she said. IN ADDITION to raising funds for the anti-draft movement, W-CARD also of- fers draft counseling for males faced with registration. "We have counselors who are trained to talk and give infor- mation on their (registrants) status and what their options are," Hefley said. Many of those now working with W- CARD were involved with the anti-war movement of more than a decade ago, according to Hefley. "There are a lot of older members who come out of the anti-war years during the Vietnam war," she said. "We have quite a gamut of ages." Today The weather Today looks like its going to be the best of the summer. Highs will be in the mid 80s and skies will be clear.
