The 41-year-old Tiant, 1-1, making his second start for the Angels since being purchased from Tabasco of the Mexican League.on Aug.2, went seven innings and gave up six hits while striking out four and walking one. His last win came on Sept. 15, 1981, when he beat the Chicago Cubs for the Pittsburgh Pirates. LUIS SANCHEZ struck out Gary Gaetti with runners on second and third to end the game and record his second save. Viola, 3-4, went 7 1/3 innings, yielded five hits, struck out ten and walked none. With one out in the eighth, Bobby Grich doubled and Tim Foli singled him to third to chase Viola. Pete Redfern walked Brian Downing to load the bases and Jeff Little came on to face Jackson, pinch-hitting for Juan Beniquez. JACKSON doubled home Grich and Foli with a drive just inside the right- field line that bounced over the glove of diving first baseman Kent Hrbek. Tiant retired eight Twins in a row before Sal Butera singled with two out in the third. Minnesota went ahead 1-0 in the fifth when Gary Ward led off with a double and scored on Gaetti's single. Viola retired the first ten Angels, striking out five of them, before Juan Beniquez singled cleanly up the middle. Viola then retired nine more in a row until Doug DeCinces tied the score with his 24th homer with one out in the seventh. DeCinces' homer, the 12th in his last 13 games, allowed California to break a 21-year-old club record with homers in 17 straight games. Padres 8, Braves 2 SAN DIEGO (AP) - Terry Kennedy whacked a two-run homer and pitcher Chris Welsh added a two-run double ina five-run sixth inning as the San Diego Padres routed Atlanta 8-2 yesterday, handing the Braves their 10th straight loss. It was the Braves' 14th loss in 15 games, who were nine games in front in the National LeagueWest when their slide started July 30. Atlanta is now 0-8 on their current road trip and one loss shy of themost consecutive losses by a Brave team on the road. WELSH, 6-5, earned the win in relief of starter Andy Hawkins and set a club record for most RBIs in a season by a pitcher with 10. Rookie Tony Gwynn continued his feast on Atlanta pitching with a fifth-in- ning double which broke a 2-2 tie. He added an RBI-double in the sixth inning outburst when the Padres sent nine men to the plate. Kennedy's 14th homer of the year, a line-shot over the right-field fence off starter Bob Walk,10-8, came after Sixto Lezcano drew a one-out walk. Luis Salazar followed Kennedy with single and stole second. With two out, Tim Flannery was intentionally walked set- ting up consecutive doubles by Welsh and Gwynn. Atlanta took a brief 1-0 lead in the second on Jerry Royster's RBI-double following Glenn Hubbard's one-out single. The Padres capitalized on a two-base error and a wild pitch to move in front 2-1 in the third. Dodgers 6, Giants 2 LOS ANGELES (AP) - Ron Cey knocked in three runs with a home run and a bases-loaded single as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Francisco Giants 6-2, snapping the Giants' 10-game winning streak. The Dodgers' victory increased their lead in the National League West to 1% games over slumping Atlanta, which lost its 10th straight game, 8-2 to San Diego. THE DODGERS broke open a 2-2 tie with four runs in the eighth. Reliever Al Holland, who entered the game with the bases loaded, nobody out and a 3-0 count on Pedro Guerrero, served up ball four to score Steve Sax with the tie- breaking run. Cey, who stroked his 17th homer in the fourth inning, followed with a two-run single. Tom Niedenfuer, 2-2, who relieved starter Jerry Reuss when the Giants had the bases loaded in the sixth, ear- ned the victory. San Francisco took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Joe Morgan doubled, Jack Clark singled him to third and Reggie Smith's base hit to left produced the run. CEY'S HOMER with one out in the fourth tied it 1-1, and the Dodgers then went ahead 2-1 when Steve Garvey followed with a single and Bill Russell hammered a triple to right-center field. In the sixth, Chili Davis and Morgan led off with singles, and Clark doubled to center to score Davis and tie it 2-2. Niedenfuer took over and, after walking Smith intentionally to load the bases, Jeff Leonard lifted a fly to right that Guerrero caught. His throw to the plate doubled Morgan, who was attem- pting to score. The Giants' 10-game win streak was their longest in 16 years, when they won 12 in a row in 1966.
