At tournaments end, the streak had been extended, but just barely, as the Wolverines and Minnesota tied for first place. Then, earlier this season, Wisconsin ended Michigan's win streak of 34 straight Big Ten matches by beating the Wolverines, 5-4. Michigan foes a glimmer of hope that the Wolveriines' domination of the Big Ten title was coming to an end. MICHIGAN laid such thoughts to rest this weekend in Madison, Wisconsin by winning yet another Big Ten title. The Wolverines topped second-place Minn- esota, 60-54. To take the Big Ten crown, Michigan had to come from behind to catch the Gophers. After the first day of play, Minnesota led the Wolverines, 30-24. To amass such a total, the Gophers got vic- tories out of all six of its singles players and all three of its doubles teams. Michigan, on the other hand, got vic- tories from five singles players and two doubles teams. Only Ross Laser (fifth singles) and the team of Tom Haney and Ihor Debryn (second doubles) lost on the first day of play for the Wolverines. AFTER TWO days of play, Michigan had narrowly pulled ahead of the Gophers, 46-45. But on the third and final day, Michigan won four-of-nine titles to give it a more comfortable six- point margin of victory. Winning these titles were Mark Mees (second singles), Haney (third singles), Bill Godfrey (fourth singles) and Michael Leach-Mees (first doubles). Mees advanced to the finals in the second-singles competition by eding Minnesota's Hakan Almstrom,'6-0, 3-6, 4n Big 7-6. In the finals,. Mees again ;required three setsto win the match. This time, he beat Wisconsin's Andy Ringlien, 3-6,, 6-2,6-3. HANEY HAD a much easier time of it than Mees, as he won both his semifinal and final matches in straight sets. In the semi's, he defeated Purdue's Alan Kaufman, 6-2, 6-3. In the finals, he downed the Gophers Ted Kauffmann, 6- 4, 6-4. Godfrey also made easy work of his semifinal and final opponents. In the semi's he beat Michigan State's Scott King, 6-4, 6-3. Illinois' Neil Adams fell to Godfrey in the finals by a 6-3, 6-4 score. In the finals of first singles play, Michigan's Leach squared off against Ohio State's Ernie Fernandez in what has become a very familiar sight. In each of the last three years, Leach and Fernandez have faced each other in the championship round at the Big Ten's. Leach won two years ago, while Fer- nandez evened the score last season. FERNANDEZ made it two straight Big Ten titles as he won, 6-4, 6-3. Des- pite this loss, Leach joined teammate Mees on the All-Big Ten team. Leach was able to defeat Fernandez in doubles play, however, when he and Mees downed the first singles champion and Chris Cunin in the finals of first doubles play, 7-6, 6-2. Michigan was represented in one Ten other final, but Godfrey and Rod Schreiber were defeated in third- singles competition by Northwestern's Mike Krebs and Danny Weiss, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. Following Michigan and Minnesota in the team scoring were Wisconsin (32 points), Ohio State (29), Illinois (24), Northwestern (21), Michigan State U6), Purdue (7), Iowa (6) and Indiana 4 4 I I Haney ...wins third singles Mees ... double winner Ivie home run leads Tigers to 3-1 win slammed a two-run homer in the seven- ARLINGTON, Texas tAP) - Desig- th inning to put Chicago ahead and nated hitter Mike Ivies first American Tony Bernazard and Greg Luzinski ad- League home run, a two-run shot in the ded solo shots in the ninth to give the first inning, backed Milt Wilcox's eight- Chicago White Sox a 6-3 victory over the hit pitehing last night as the Detroit Toronto Blue Jays last night and extend Tigers inflicted a3-1 loss on the sagging their winning streak to seven games.
