Sports Page 12 Thursday, August 12, 1982 The Michigan Daily Tigers trip Yanks, 3-2 A DETROIT (UPI) - Jerry Turner lof- ted a sacrifice fly withone out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th inning last night, scoring Lou Whitaker from third base and providing the Detroit Tigers with a 3-2 victory over the New York Yankees. Whitaker singled to startthe 12th af- ter shortstop Roy Smalley dropped his pop foul in left field for an error. Richie Hebner then looped a single to short center and Larry Hferndon sacrificed both runners. Lance Parrish was then intentionally walked to load the bases. GEORGE Frazier, who came on in the 12th, took the loss. Dave Tobik was the winner in relief of Jack Morris, who pitched 11 innings and allowed only three hits. Oscar Gamble's solo homer with one out in the ninth tied the score 2-2 after Morris had gone the previous 5-1/3 in- nings without giving upa hit. Dave Righetti balked home a run in the third inning to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. Tom Brookens tripled leading off the third, a ball Ken Griffey had trouble picking up in right-center, and Righetti then balked with Alan Trammell at bat to snap a 1-1 tie. Parrish hit an -opposite-field homer leading off the second for the Tigers. New York scored its first run in the first, taking advantage of a momentary loss of control by Morris. Jerry Mum- phrey walked with two out and Winfield grounded a single up the middle after first baseman Enos Cabell dropped his foul pop for an error. Morris got a strike on Oscar Gamble but then threw nine straight balls, including a walk to Graig Nettles, to force ina run. Rangers 6, Brewers 3 MILWAUKEE (AP) - Buddy Bell singled home the go-ahead run in a four-run Texas seventh inning, rallying the Rangers to a 6-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers yesterday. Dave Schmidt, 3-4, who relieved Texas starter Rick Honeycutt after Milwaukee had scored three runs in the sixth, earned the victory. The Rangers stopped a streak of seven victories in nine games by the American League East-leading Brewers. LOSER MOOSE Haas, 9-7, carried a 3-2 lead into the seventh, but gave up leadoff singles to Jim Sundberg and Mike Richardt. Haas got the next two batters but John Grubb singled up the middle to score the tying run. Bell singled to center, his third hit, to chase Haas as the Rangers led 4-3. Dave Hostetler and Larry Parrish followed with RBI singles off Dwight Bernard to make it 6-3. The Rangers scored twice. Parrish doubled to the left field corner and scored on a double by Lamar Johnson down the right field line. Johnson scored on a single by Richardt. THE BREWERS came back with three runs in the sixth off Honeycutt, who had allowed three hits through five shutout innings. Robin Yount singled with one out and took second on a bloop single by Cecil Cooper. Ted Simmons hit a shot off Honeycutt's leg and the ball caromed toward Bucky Dent at shortstop, who flipped to second for a forceout. Giants 8, Braves 6 SAN FRANCISCO- (AP) - Reggie Smith's two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning Wed- nesday lifted the surging San Francisco Giants to their 10th consecutive victory, 8-6 over the Atlanta Braves, whose losing streak went to nine games. Joe Morgan led off the 12th with a walk off pitcher Carlos Diaz, 2-2, and was forced on Jack Clark's grounder to short. Smith then belted a 2-1 pitch over the screen in left-center for his 12th home run of the season, and only his second as a right-handed batter. RELIEVER Fred Breining, 7-4, was the winner after firing four shutout in- nings. the victory gave the Giants their longest winning streak since they reeled off 12 in a row April 30 - May 13, 1966. The Giants have posted the major league's best record since June 27, 28- 13. The Braves jumped to a 5-1 lead behind veteran knuckleballer Phil Niekro, but the Giants bounced back for a tie with three unearned runs in the sixth.
