Page 2-Wednesday, August 11 1982-The Michigan Daily Ruppe eclaims victory in GOP Senate primary From staff andwirereports With only 3 percent of the vote in, former U.S. Rep. Philip Ruppe claimed victory last night in the Republican U.S. Senate primary from his cam- paign headquarters in Bloomfield Hills. Detroit television stations WDIV-TV, WJBK-TV and WWJ radio agreed with Ruppe, projecting him as-the winner based on a survey of voters leaving the polls. WJBK and WWJ share the same polling services. "THIS IS a very exciting occasion for me and my family. I believe Michigan wants an end to politicans with easy an- swers to tough questions," Ruppe said. Ruppe was on top in the early returns with 11,940 or 58 percent of the vote to 3,638 or 18 percent for his closest challenger, former state licensing director William Ballenger. In third with 2,920 or 14 percent was University of Michigan Regent Deane Baker, while industrialist and former congressman Robert Huber brought up the rear with 2,188 or 10 percent of the vote. Baker last night admitted Ruppe, "obviously is the candidate" based on reports from 3 percent of the vote, but he added he would wait for the total tallies before drawing his final con- clusions. He said he would support Ruppe in the fall because, "I have always supported the party candidate." Baker predicted that the economy would be a main issue in the race bet- ween Ruppe and his democratic op- ponent, incumbent Senator Donald Riegle. Ruppe was leading last night in every major area of the state reporting retur- ns from the lightly attended election. Ruppe spokesperson Mary Mead was confident of the results despite the small number of votes that had been counted. "A lot of hard work has gone into this campaign and we think it's going to pay off tonight," she said. Ruppe, a wealthy former beer com- pany executive, stressed his congressional experience during the campaign. Today The weather Fall seems ready to creep up on campus today. Temperatures will be in the crisp, cooler 70s and skies will be clear. Q White House gate crasher A SPEEDING CAR being chased by police crashed into a White House gate last week and the car's nude driver made a unsuccessful getaway dash down Pennsylvania Avenue. Joseph Petro, a Secret Service sokesman, identified the driver as Roland Martin, 29, of suburban District Heights, Md. "It doesn't appear there was any real motive," Petro said. "The vehicle turned at a high rate of speed right into the gate." No weapons were found in the car, and there was only slight damage to the gate on the northwest corner of the White House grounds, according to Petro. "He ran into the middle of Pennsylvania Avenue, where he was subdued," Petro said of Martin. "He was nude-not a stitch on." The White House gate crasher was charged with assaulting an officer. Q Got your gander DR.KURT VON MAUR of Portage, Mich. took a gander at his front lawn recently and found it had been overrun by 150 to 200 wild Canadian geese. Von Maur grabbed his gun - he didn't want to kill the geese, he just wanted to scare them away. First, however, he had to ask the Portage City Council for an exception to an ordinance that makes it illegal to fire a gun. "This may be comical, but now I have 150 to 200 wild geese in my front yard and it's getting out of hand," Von Maur griped. The council agreed to Von Maur's plea and now he can try and frighten the big bunch of birds off his property. Q Happenings Films AAFC - The Valley (Obscured by Clouds), 7:30 & 9:30 p.m., Lorch. (UPI) - Civil rights leader Vernon Jordan testified yesterday he never saw the sniper whose bullet blasted a fist-sized hole in his back and came within one-half inch of killing him. Jordan and Dr. Jeffrey Towles, the physician who saved his life, testified in the trial of avowed racist Joseph Paul Franklin. He is charged with violating. Jordan's civil rights by shooting him May 29, 1980, in a Fort Wayne parking lot. DEFENSE attorneys say there is no evidence to show who shot Jordan. they say prosecutors are using Franklin as "a convenient solution." "I felt a sharp, sudden pain in my back and I thought I was dreaming, that I would wake up and it would be gone. But I knew I had been shot," Jor- dan said. Jordan said he never saw the person who shot him and never heard the shot, just felt the impact and felt his body getting wet with blood. Jordan described the speech he made as president of the National Urban League to the Fort Wayne chapter, drinking coffee with white Urban League director Martha Coleman and being driven to his motel by her. He said that when he got out of her car and walked behind it, "I all of a sudden felt myself sailing into the air." Towles said that if the rifle slug had passed half an inch to the right it would have severed Jordan's spine. "I THINK HE came just about as close to dying s one can come without dying," Towles said, describing Jor- dan's 16 days and five operations at Fort Wayne's Parkview Memorial Hospital.. 4 Jordan ... never saw assailant Jordan spent 84 days recuperating in New York Hospital in New York City, flown there on a hospital plane dispat- ched by then-President Jimmy Carter. "I didn't think we were going to get him off the operating table because he was bleeding so profusely in so many places," Towles said. Robert Sibert of the FBI laboratory said his study of the bullet fragments indicated it was fired from a Remington .30-06 rifle, model 700 or 760. He said he never did identify a weapon to match the bullet fragments. Prosecutors claim Franklin was so consumed with hatred of blacks that he shot Jordan and bragged about it.
