The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, May 11, 1982-Page 11 Ind. sign starts cross-state feud BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (UPI) - There's a war between the states brewing on the Michigan-Indiana border, and words - more precisely, tourism slogans - are the weapons. An Indiana billboard company put up a sign - exposed to thousands of recent visitors to Indiana University - urging vacationers to "Say No to Michigan. Wander Indiana First." Michigan tourism officials are taking the butchery of their "Say Yes to Michigan" television and newspaper campaign in stride, but some Michiganders aren't amused, and have complained to the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. Travel officials in Indiana, in the midst of their own "wan- der Indiana" campaign, are proclaiming they had nothing to do with the billboard - but they apparently aren't terribly up- set about it either. The tourism bureau in Bloomington published a photo of the billboard on the front page of a special newsletter honoring "Wander Indiana" week. Josephine Hickman, president of Hoosier Outdoor Adver- tising, admitted her billboard "pokes fun at Michigan." "But there are 'Say Yes to Michigan' signs posted all over northern Indiana and Hosiers'feelings aren't hurt," she said. She said she didn't know how long the sign would stay up, but noted thousands probably saw it during the recent Little 500 bicycle race and graduation ceremonies at Indiana University. F- A l r AP Photo DRIVERS LEAVING Indiana are strongly urged to reconsider their plans according to a billboard put up on a highway leading to the great lakes state.
