Jackson being sued RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP)- A bong Island housewife who said she "idolized" Reggie Jackson has filed a $3.1-million lawsuit against the former New York Yankee baseball slugger, alleging that he struck her when she tried to get his autograph. In her state Supreme Court suit, Hope Santiago, 33, of Deer Park, said Jackson hit her on the head in a Yankee Stadium parking lot on July 23 after Jackson had parked his car. JACKSON, NOW a player with the California Angels, was in town at the time for a three-game series with the Yankees. Matt Merola, Jackson's New York agent, replied, "Reggie told me it didn't happen. The fellow who went to the stadium with him told me nothing happened. "I believe them both." AND MEROLA said that "the police would have said something to me" if the incident had occurred.' Merola said he was "baffled" about Santiago's reason for filing the suit, "unless it's a way of getting some money." Santiago said she had "been following Jackson since he was a rookie-when he played for Oakland, Baltimore, and the Yankees." SANTIAGO SAID she was one of about 20 fans who con- verged on Jackson as he emerged from his car. One woman gave him a dozen roses and he threw them on the ground, she said. Jackson also gave a $100 bill to an old man whom he ap- parently knew, she said. Then, she said, "For no apparent reason he started swinging his arms and jogging through the crowd. He hit me in the face and I was thrown against a chain link fence." Santiago's attorney, Sidney Siben, of Bay Shore, said his client suffered a dislocated shoulder and face lacerations, but also "was hurt emotionally." 4 4
