Page 10-Tuesday, May 11 1982=The Michigan Daily 'Niekiedeby', 'Joseph,' 'Nine' up for Tony's NEW YORK (AP) - Two musicals, Nine and Dreamgirls, and a play, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, based on Charles Dickens' classic novel, were announced Monday as top nominees for Broadway's top honor, the Tony awards. Dreamgirls, the new Michael Bennett production about a Supremes-like trio of pop singers, got 13 nominations, one more than Nine, based on Federico Fellini's sureal film, 81/z. Nickleby, brought to Broadway for a limited run by the Royal Shakespeare Company at $100 a ticket for the 8 -hour show, got the most nominations for a play - eight.; The nominations, covering 19 categories, were made by a 13-member panel voting on 23 plays and 10 musicals eligible for Tonys in the 1981-82 season that ended Sunday. Nominees for the Tony awards include a father and his daughter, believed to be a first. Christopher Plummer was nominated in the best actor category, for his Iago in Othello. His daughter, Amanda Plummer. was nominated twice, as best actress, in A Taste of Honey, and as best supporting actress in Agnes of God. The latter is still running. Nominations for best play are Nicholas Nickleby, Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley of Jackson, Miss., The Dresser by Ronald Harwood of Britain and Master Harold and the boys by Athol Fugard of South, Africa. Nominations for best musical are Dreamgirls, Nine, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream- coat, based on a Bible story, and Pump Boys and Dinettes, set in the rural South. In addition to Plummer, best actor nominations went to Roger Rees in the title role of Nicholas Nickleby, Tom Courtenay in the title role of The Dresser and Milo O'Shea as the older priest in the two-character Mass Appeal. Best actress nominations went to Amanda Plum- mer, Zoe Caldwell in the title role of Medea, Katharine Hepburn in The West Side Waltz and Geraldine Page in Agnes of God. Best actor in a musical nominations are Ben Bar- ney in Dreamgirls, Raul Julia in Nine, Victor Garber in Little Me, which has closed, and Herschel Bernardi in a Lincoln Center revival of Fiddler on the Roof. Best actress in a musical nominations went to Jen- nifer Holliday and Sheryl Lee Ralph in Dreamgirls, Mary Gordon Murray in Little Me and Lisa Mordente in Marlowe, which had a very short run. Best director, play, nominations went to Trevor Nunn and John Caird, Nicholas Nickleby, Melvin Bernhardt, Crimes of the Heart, Athol Fugard, Master Harold and the boys, and Geraldine Fit- zgerald, Mass Appeal.
