CINCINNATI (AP)- Ricky Wright held Cincinnati
to two hits over six innings in his first major league
start and doubled in a run, and Steve Garvey slugged
a three-run homer as the Los Angeles Dodgers
crushed the Reds 8-2 yesterday for their sixth victory
in the last seven games.
Wright, appearing in his second major league
game, gave upa leadoff single to Tom Lawless in the
first inning and didn't allow another hit until Dave
Concepcion hit his second home run of the season
with two out in the sixth and Rafael Landestoy on
base after a walk.
WRIGHT, 1-0, struck out four and walked four
before he was replaced by reliever Joe Beckwith,
who gave up two hits over 2 1/3 innings. Beckwith lost
his edge during a 40-minute rain delay and walked
Dan Driessen and pinch-hitter Duane Walker when
play resumed and was lifted for Terry Forster, who
finished up.
The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the third when Steve
Sax singled and scored one out later on a two-base hit
by Rick Monday, who had two doubles and a single.
Los Angeles then erupted for four runs in the fourth
inning against Cincinnati starter Bruce Berenyi, 8-11.
Ron Cey led off with a walk and was forced at second
by Garvey, who went to third on Mike Scioscia's
single. Mark Belanger then delivered Garvey with a
squeeze bunt and was awarded a hit when nobody
covered first base. Wright then doubled in Scioscia
and Sax added a two-run double for a 5-0 lead.
Garvey made it 8-0 in the fifth with his 11th homer
of the year, against reliever Greg Harris.
COMMISSIONER
Greelect
Gerad Faye
DEMOCRAT
(The following letter to the editor
appeared in the Ann Arbor News,
July 22, 1982).
Bring back Faye
I encourage voters from the 9th
County Commissioner District to
vote for Gerry Faye on August 10.I
have worked with Gerry for the past
two years on the County Board and
have come to value his considerable
knowledge and experience.
Nearly as important as Gerry's
own wealth of ideas and sense of
direction for the county, however, is
his style of cooperative leadership.
He listens to the ideas and views of
others; he works cooperatively with
county staff and with other
commissioners. While giving
direction and supervision to our
excellent county staff, he allows
them the latitude to do the job for
which we pay them. He helps set
clear policy and direction from the
Board, but leaves daily
management of the County to our
professional staff.
Gerry is committed to good,
progressive, well-managed County
government of which we all may be
proud. He has been an important
asset these past years. We need
Gerry Faye back on the County
Board of Commissioners. Please vote
on August 10.
