BALTIMORE (AP) - Rick Dempsey
and Rich Dauer combined to drive in
five runs and Dennis Martinez pitched
an eight hitter as the Baltimore Orioles
beat the Boston Red Sox 7-2 in the first
game of yesterday's twi-night double-
header, snapping a five-game losing
streak.
Dempsey's two-out infield single
knocked in Baltimore first run during a
four-run uprising in the fifth inning
against Chuck Rainey, 6-4. Al Bumbry
followed with an RBI double, tying the
score 2-2, and Dauer's two-run single
capped the rally.
The Orioles loaded the bases in the
sixth on singles by Eddie Murray and
pinch hitter Dan Ford, a force play and
a walk to Gary Roenicke.
Tom Burgmeier was lifted after
yielding a bloop RBI single to Lenn
Sakata and Dempsey greeted reliever
Luis Aponte with a two-run single.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Len Barker
and Dan Spillner combined to pitch a
four-hitter and Ron Hassey homered to
spark the Clevland Indians to a 2-0 vic-
tory over the Texas Rangers in the first
game of a tw.i-night doubleheader
yesterday.
Barker, 11-6, gave up three hits,
struck out five and walked five before
leaving in favor of Spillner with one out
in the eighth. Spillner posted his 15th
save.
DAVE SCHMIDT, 2-3, pitched the fir-
st six innings for Texas and yielded
both Cleveland runs.
Hassey gave the Indians a 1-0 lead in
the second inning when he drilled his
third home run, far over the right-
center field fence.
Cleveland made it 2-0 in the fifth
when Miguel Dilone lined a two-out
triple inside the right-field line and
Toby Harrah followed with a single.
White Sox 1, Yankees 0
NEW YORK (AP) - Steve Trout and
three relievers blanked New York on
seven hits and Aurelio Rodriguez
singled home the game's only run in the
fifth inning as the Chicago White Sox
edged the Yankees 1-0 in the opener of
yesterday's twi-night doubleheader.
Trout, 6-6, making his first start since

June 27, went 5 1/3 innings,-yielding four
singles, walking one and striking out
five.
THE WHITE Sox, who have won four
games in a row, nicked Shane Rawley,
6-6, for the run after Steve Kemp
opened the fifth inning with a single.
Carlton Fisk forced Kemp and went to
second when Chris Nyman lined a hit
off Rawley's glove. Vance Law lined to
right, but Rodriguez bounced a run-
scoring single through the left side.
Trout, who had pitched only 10 1/3 in-
nings in four relief appearances over
the last five weeks, was replaced by
Salome Barojas in the sixth with Bucky
Dent on second. Barojas balked Dent to
third but retired Jerry Mumphrey on a
soft liner to second and struck out Dave
Winfield to get out of the inning.
In the eighth, pinch hitter Oscar
Gamble singled and, after Dave Collins
struck out, Kevin Hickey was brought
on to face Graig Nettles, another pinch-
hitter.
Nettles singled Gamble to second on

the only pitch Hickey threw, but Dennis
Lamp retired Willie Randolph on a-
double play.
Lamp got into trouble in the ninth
with two out when Ken Griffey walked
and Roy Smalley singled. But the right-
hander retired pinch hitter Bobby Mur-
cer on a grounder to third to record his
third save.
Cubs 5, Mets 0
CHICAGO (AP)- Leon Durham's
two-run homer and the three-hit pit-
ching of Doug Bird carried the Chicago
Cubs to a 5-0 victory over the New York
Mets yesterday.
The triumph was the second in a row
following an eight-game Chicago losing
streak, while the Mets suffered their
seventh loss in eight games despite
pulling off a triple play.
DURHAM'S 15th homer came in the
first inning after Ryne Sandberg had
singled. The Cubs added two more runs
in the fourth on a squeeze bunt by Larry

Bowa and a run-scoring single by Bird.
Bird, 7-10, hurled his second complete
game of the season and his first shutout
despite near 90-degree weather and a 14
mph wind blowing out. He walked two
and struck out five.
Keith Moreland opened the Cub four-
th with a double and advanced to third
on Jay Johnstone's fly to left. Gary
Woods walked before Bowa squeezed
Moreland home, and Bird singled to
score Woods.
WOODS DOUBLED in the sixth, went
to third on Bowa's infield single and
scored as Bird grounded into a double
play.
Rookie Brent Gaff, 0-3, took the loss.
The Mets pulled off a triple in the
eighth inning after Jay Johnstone
doubled and Woods walked. Bowa hit a
pop fly that shortstop Bob Bailor grab-
bed with a fine running catch. Bailor
relayed the ball to second baseman
Wally Bakcman to double off John-
stone, and Backman threw to first
baseman Dave Kingman to get Woods.

TEXAS RANGERS' FIRST baseman Dave Hostetler (above, left) is tagged out at home by Cleveland Indians' catcher
