Ben gals drop Yankees

NEW YORK - Detroit, which has
had a season of short streaks, appear to
be on another one as it compiled its
fourth win in a row by defeating the New
York Yankees 5-3 last night. Jerry Uj-
dur posted his fourth victory of the
season while newcomer Dave Gumpert
earned his first save. Mike Morgan
took the loss for the Yankees.
Lance Parrish gave the Tigers an
early lead when he hit his 17th home run
of the season to lead off the second in-
ning. The All-Star catcher belted a solo
shot into the lower left-field seats.
THE YANKEES tied the game in the
third when Rick Cerone singled and
was driven in by Willie Randolph. Ran-
dolph stretched his single into a double
on a Glenn Wilson error but was stran-
ded on third at the end of the inning.
Larry Herndon hit a line drive n the
top of the fourth and John Mayberry
overthrew first base placing the ball in
the Yankee dugout. Herndon advanced
to second on the error. Parrish then hit
him home with a single, but was then
picked off stealing second.
New York answered the run im-
mediately when Ujdur walked Dave
Winfield who reached third on Craig
Nettles' double. Ujdur then balked
while pitching to Cerone which enabled
Winfield to score. Cerone then hit into a
force ut at first to finish the inning.
ALAN TRAMMELL walked with two
outs in the fifth and was driven home by
a Lou Whitaker double. Then Tom
Brookens hita ground rule double down
the right-field line, scoring Whitaker
and bringing the Tiger lead to 4-2.
The Tigers added to their lead in the
eighth when Herndon tripled with two-
outs. Parrish followed immediately
with a triple, scoring the Tiger out-
fielder. Doyle Alexander then struck
out Jerry Turner, to retire the side.
The Yankees closed the gap
somewhat in the bottom of the stanza
when Mumphrey doubled with two
away. Dave Rucker took the mound for
Detroit and gave up a hit to Lou Pinella
scoring the center fielder.
Rucker found himself in trouble in the
final inning after he gave up singles to
Dave Collins and Cerone. Gumpert
then came in with one out in the frame.
Bobby Mercer hit into a double play
which ended the game.
Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 2
BOSTON (AP) - Dwight Evans led
off the eighth with a single, raced to
third on a single by Jim Rice and scored
on a double-ply grounder last night as
the Boston Red Sox rallied for a 3-2 vic-
tory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
The victory, combined with
Milwaukee's 3-1 loss to Texas, moved
Boston into the American League East
Lad, one-half game ahead of the
Brewers.
RIGHT-HANDER Dennis Eckersley,
going the distance for the 11th time in 21
starts, pitched a seven-hitter in im-
proving his record to 11-8.
Eckersley outdueled rookie right-
hander Jim Gott, 1-6, who retired the
first 11 Boston hatters.
Toronto took a 1-0 lead in the second
when, with two outs, Dave Revering
lined a single to right, Ernie Whitt
walked and Al Woods grounded an RBI
single through the middle.
Rovals 8, Indians 1
CLEVELAND (AP)- Hal McRae
singled twice, doubled and homered,
driving in three runs and Willie Wilson
tripled twice as the Kansas City Royals
pounded out 15 hits in an 8-1 victory
over the Cleveland Indians last night.
The RBIs boosted McRae's major
league-leading total to 88.
VIDA BLUE, 8-7, who turns 33
tomorrow, struck out four and walked
four while surrendering just four hits in
seven innings.
He pitched no-hit ball through five in-
nings before running into trouble in the
sixth. The Indians loaded the bases on
singles by Larry Milbourne and Toby
Harrah and a walk to Mike Hargrove
before Andre Thornton lined an RBI
single.
Blue, however, settled down to retire
the next three hitters without further
damage. Dan Quisenberry finished up
with two scoreless innings of relief.
TheRoyals took a 3-0 led against Tom
Brennan, 0-2, with the help of two
Cleveland errors in the third inning.
Singles by Frank White, Jamies Quirk
and U. L. Washington brought one run
in.
WITH RUNNERS at first and second,
McRae then singled to score Quirk. In-
dians center fielder Rick Manning let
the ball get through for one error, and
right fielder Von Hayes threw wildly to
the infield, allowing Washington to
score.
Kansas City added a run in the fifth
on Wilson's first triple and a double by
Washington.
The Royals went ahead 6-0 in the six-
th on singles by Steve Hammond and
White and Wilson's second triple.
McRae hit his 17th homer in the
seventh, after Geoge Brett had singled.
Rangers 3, Brewers 1
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)-
Knuckleball specialist Charlie Hough
baffled hot-hitting Milwaukee on four
hits as the Texas Rangers beat the
Brewers 3-1 last night.
Hough, 9-8, walked one and struck out
four in logging his seventh complete
game of the year.
NO MILWAUKEE runner got as far
as second base until the seventh inning
when Cecil Cooper singled and Ted
Simmons doubled him home.
Mike Caldwell, 7-10, took the loss.
Texas got a run in the fourth when
Lee Mazzilli singled, Dave Hostetler
walked and Lamar Johnson singled to
left.
In the fifth, George Wright doubled,
took third on an infield out, and scored
on Doug Flynn's two-strike suicide
squeeze bunt to make it 2-0.
After the Brewers scored in the top of
the seventh, the Rangers came back
with a run in their half as Mike Richar-
dt singled, stole second and scored on a
error by second baseman Jim Gantner.
Reds 4, Cubs 2
CINCINNATI (AP)- Dan Driessen
and Johnny Bench rapped consecutive
home runs and drove in two runs apiece
last night, powering the Cincinnati
Reds to a 4-2 victory over the Chicago
Cubs.
Driessen snapped a 1-1 tie with a
leadoff homer in the fourth inning, his
11th of the season, off Allen Ripley, 3-3.
The ball struck the facing of the second
deck in right field. Bench followed with
his eighth homer and third in the last
four games for a 3-1 lead.
'REDS STARTER Bob Shirley, 3-7,
pitched into the ninth inning and scat-
tered seven hits to snap a personal five-
game losing streak. It was the Reds'
third straight triumph, equaling their
longest winning streak of the season.
