I-Wednesday, July 21, 1982-The Michigan Daily Local groups bring' music to the art fair (Continuedfrom Page 6) opening spot at noon on Wednesday. Usually, more acts express interest in performing than can be accom- modated, even though most groups donate their time, according to Bartolo. "We have the advantage of being selec- tive," she said. I MUSICAL STYLE also plays a part in deciding the order in which the groups appear, Bartolo said. "We don't get real loud until the evening," she said. "Then we get into be-bop, swing, experimental music ..." The evening shows on the steps of the Union were organized by Eclipse Jazz, a student-run, non-profit organization which has been presenting jazz on campus for the last six years. "We tried to choose acts we though were good and that were local," ex- plained Eclipse Co-ordinator Peter Pretsfelder. The Eclipse shows, Pret- sfelder said, provide an excellent op- portunity for those local bands that usually don't receive much exposure. One-out-of-town group, however, that will be performing, is Big Money, a rock group from West Virginia. One member, according to Pretsfelder, is also an exhibitor in the Summer Arts Festival. There is no problem attracting an audience, Pretsfelder explained. "Last year we had more people than we've ever had before," he said, adding that the crowd overflowed down State Street and onto to lawn of the art museum. "We get more people than we expect and know what to do with." Many of the local bars and clubs also offer special musical attractions during the fair. For the third year, Rick's American Cafe will provide outdoor en- tertainment with a stage on Church Street. Rick's will feature a number of local favorites including I-tal, the Ur- bations, and the Flexibles. They give it the look each year . . . They give it the new flavor." The fair is sponsored by the South University Merchants in conjunction with the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair Inc., a non-profit organization which helps coordinate the event each year. TIlE ARTISTS must pay a charge for their booth to cover the cost of leasing the sidewalks and streets, according to Terry Chase, president-elect of the Street Art Fair Committee. In addition to the art booths, the Ann Arbor YMCA has organized a Children's Activities Booth which will be located on South University, bet- ween South Forest and Church Streets. The booth will be open from 10 a.m. to noon, 2 to 4 p.m., and 6 to 8 p.m., Wed- nesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday. There is no charge for the booth which is open to children between the ages of four and 10. Children under four must be accompanied by anadult. An information booth, located at the corner of South and East University and open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wed- nesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, will also be available.
