Page 6-Wednesday, July 21 1982-The Michigan Daily Local acts highlight entertainment By ROBERT WEISBERG For those of you who are music lovers, but think the art fair is all art and no play, a visit to the steps of the Michigan Union or the Graceful Arch should prove otherwise. Throughout the four-day event, both the University Artists and Craftsmen Guild's Summer Arts Festival and the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair will be spon- soring acts at these two respective locations. AND THESE are not your usual summer fair, song and dance acts. This year the fairs will feature everything from martial arts demonstrations to jazz, rock, reggae, and folk bands to several comedy artists. Both fairs started lining up their acts back in February and, according to University Artists and Craftsmen Guild Associate Director Rita Bartplo, many variables are involved in choosing the bands that get to play, as well as what time they get to do so. "We try to put together a good strong schedule," Bartolo explained, adding that it's difficult to make decisions regarding the bands because of the diversity of both the audience and the ' performers. ALTHOUGH MANY of the performers are from the Ann Arbor area, about half are chosen from those who send in tapes and other promotional material, according to Bartolo, who will sometimes go and see an act that's ex- pressed interest in performing. "They contacted me about a year ago," she said of the guitar playing duo Mustard's Retreat. "I saw them live and they put on a good strong show."
