Cubs 4, Braves 3 CHICAGO (AP)- Jay Johnstone's two-out, 10th-inning single scored the winning run as the Chicago Cubs took a 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves yesterday in a game that was delayed more than two hours by rain. The game was delayed after Ryne Sandberg took two pitches from loser Gene Garber, 6-4, in the bottom of the 10th inning when a torrential rain fell over Wrigley Field. TWO HOURS and 19 minutes later, the game resumed and Sandberg lined a double to advance Junior Kennedy to third. Kennedy had singled before the delay. Bill Buckner was then intentionally walked and Garber got the next two . outs before Johnstone lined a 1-1 pitch over third baseman Jerry Royster's head into left field to knock in Buckner with the winning run. Bill Campbell, 2-4, came on in the 10th AP Photo and earned the victory. Clampett opens five- stroke lead at Troon TROON, Scotland (AP) - Bobby Clampett, a calm exterior belying a bubbling excitement, composed a brilliant 6-under-par 66 yesterday and took a five-stroke command of the 111th British Open Golf Championship. "Inside, I'm bubbling like crazy," the skinny, curly-haired- 22-year-old said after he'd posted a 133 total - 11 strokes under par and only one off the record for the best two opening rounds ever shot in this ancient event, a record set 48 years ago by Henry Cotton. WHILE IT MAY have missed the record, it was more than enough to have his nearest challengers shaking their heads in dismay. "I like to look at the leader boards' while I'm playing," said U.S. Open champion Tom Watson, who started the day's play only two strokes off the pace. "I looked and I'm eight behind and I'm playing pretty well, and I'm won- dering what do I have to do?" AND WATSON, a three-time winner of this event chasing a young man who has yet to win his first title on the American PCA tour, quickly answered his own question: "I just have to go out and play better than I did today and yesterday and try to catch this man." And that, admitted Watson, will not be an easy task. "HE'S GOING TO be a tough man to beat," said Watson, who managed a 71 and was seven strokes back with a 140 total. "I'm not really concerned about the lead. I'm concerned with scoring as low as I can," said Clampett, a frequent challenger but not yet a winner in the United States. "It will be a mental challenge from here on out. "My goal is toshoot the best score I can this week. If someone can beat that, fine. If not, I win." And if he stays near his current pace, said longshot Nick Price of Zimbabwe, who surprised himself with his No. 2 position at the halfway point, Clampett is the winner. "If Clampett keeps on playing like this, nobody is going to catch him," said Price, a journeyman player of no par- ticular distinction on the European tour.
