Murder suspeet guided

by 'spirits,'
DETROIT (UPI)- Mass murder
suspect Maris Karklins was controlled
by "bad spirits" and thought one of his
victims was a "witch," his father said
in an interview with the Detroit Free
Press.
Karklins, 41, of Grand Rapids, was
charged with five counts of first-degree
murder this week in the March 13
slayings of Robert and Mary Jane
Paulson and their three daughters at
their Allendale home:
IN AN interview at his Grand Rapids
home, Juris Karklins, a 75-year-old
Latvia immigrant, said his son has
been treated in mental institutions five
times.
"My son was sent over to Korea in the
Army, and it was in nighttime when the
North Koreans starting shooting,"
Karklins said. "They shoot his good
friend, who was right there with him."
"When that happened with his friend,

says father
Maris start thinking something wrong
with God, and that was the time for bad
.spirits to come in," Karklins said. "He
got alcoholic, he start smoking grass,
and he would get high and high and high
and out of his mind.
Bad spirits take more and more over
him until they t>,,e over him com-
pletely, and that was the end of Maris
Karklins," he said. "It was not Maris
that did all this, that killed those people.
He had the big 'general' spirit in him,
not the little ones like alcohol or
smoking grass. It was the 'general'
doing all that; it was not Maris."
Juris Karklins said his son became
increasingly fascinated with military
history and military leaders after his
experience in Korea.
"About Hitler he was crazy. He was
always crazy about the Army. He
always was wearing uniforms,"
Karklins said.
