BELL'S HOMER WINS 1ST OF 2

Texas trips

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)- Buddy
Bell cracked a two-run homer with one-
out in the bottom of the ninth inning last
night, leading the Texas Rangers to a 3-
2 victory over the slumping Detroit
Tigers in the first game of a twi-night
doubleheader.
Johnny Sample led off the bottom of
the ninth with a double, only the third
hit off Tigers' starter Pat Underwood.
DAVE TOBIK, 2-3, replaced Under-
wood after the hit and retired Bill Stein
on a line drive to first. Bell then slam-
med a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence,
handing Detroit its 20th loss in 25
games.
Tom Brookens had put Detroit ahead
2-1 in the sixth.
Lance Parrish singled with one out, and
when Texas starter John Butcher went
to a 3-2 count on Mike Ivie, Danny Dar-
win was brought by Rangers skipper
Don Zimmer. Ivie drew ball four and
Darwin then walked Jerry Turner to
load the bases. . Brookens singled in
Parrish, but Darwin retired Lynn Jones
and Alan Trammell on pop flies to end
the inning.
TEXAS TOOK a 1-0 lead in the first
when Bell doubled and scored on a
single by Dave Hostetler. Detroit tied
the game in the fifth when Jones
doubled and Trammell singled him
home.
Underwood, who retired 17 straight
batters at one point, walked one and
struck out two in eight innings of work.
Darwin, 5-2, pitched 3 2/3 innings of
one-hit relief, allowing one walk and
striking out two in picking up the win.

Padres 5, Mets 3
NEW YORK (AP) - Terry Kennedy
singled home the tie-breaking run in the
seventh inning and an insurance run in
the ninth while rookie reliever Luis De
Leon snuffed a New York uprising in
the eighth as the San Diego Padres beat
the Mets 5-3 in the first game of yester-
day's twi-night double-header.
Keninedy's seveth-inning hit off loser
Charlie Puleo, 6-6, broke a 3-3 tie and
was his 10th game-winning RBI of the
season. Tim Flannery led off with a
single off Puleo's foot and was walked
to secnd. Two outs later, Kennedy
blooped a single to left to score Flan-
nery.
IN THE SAN Diego ninth, Garry
Templeton singled, stole second - the
Padres' fifth steal in as many attempts
- and scored on another single by Ken-
nedy.
The victory was the Padres' sixth
straight and stretched the Mets' longest
losing streak of the season to seven.
The Mets, who erased a 3-0 deficit
with a run in the fifth and two in the six-
th, threatened to pull it out in the eighth
when Mookie Wilson singled and Bob
Bailor was hit on the forearm by a pitch
from winner Floyd Chiffer, 4-1, who
replaced starter Chris Welsh in the six-
th. Bailor was taken to a hospital for X-
rays.
DELEON RETIRED George Foster
on a fly ball and Dave Kingman and
Ellis Valentine on pop-ups and went on
to post his eighth save of the season.

Junior Kennedy started the seventh-
inning rally, against reliever Greg
Harris with a single. Buckner grounded

pass before Morales tripled to center
and then scored on a single by Woods.
Jody Davis walked and Larry Bowa
doubled to score Woods. before Davis
scored the final run of the inning on a
sacrifice fly by Jenkins.
Twins 4, Red Sox 1
BOSTON (AP) - Rookie Frank Viola
scatttered six hits in recording his first
complete game in the major leagues
last night as the red-hot Minnesota
Twins beat the Boston Red Sox 4-1 for
their ninthvictory in their last 11 games.
Viola, 3-0, struck out six and walked
one as the Twins snapped Boston star-
ter Dennis Eckersley's three-game
winning streak. The Red Sox right-
hander has been unofficially named by
Oakland Manager Billy Martin to be the
starting pitcher for the American
League in next Tuesday's All-Star
Game at Montreal.
Minnesota took a 2-0 off Eckersley, 9-
7. in the fourth.
