The ?ichigan dailyriddy, May 7, 1982-age 19 Illinois clinches title tie EVANSTON, (AP) - Illinois clin- ched at least a tie for the Big Ten's West Division baseball crown with an 11-10 victory over Northwestern and a split of the yesterday doubleheader. The Wildcats won the opener, 2-1. ILLINOIS RALLIED for five runs in the fifth inning of the second game, the big blow coming on a two-run homer by Tim Richardson. Todd Schmitke hit a homer in the third. Eric Shellenback, Erick Mogentale, Steve Bogn and Michael Huff knocked out homers for the Wildcats. Mogen- tale's was his 11th of the year, tying an Wildcat record. The winning pitcher was Tony Leonardi, 5-3. The loser was Laird Koldyke, 0-4. In the first game; Tom Tucci provided the winning run in the sixth inning with a #olo homer, his first of the season. Marty Clary, 3-2, was the win- ner. Jeff Innis, 6-2, took the loss for the Illini. Illinois is 12-2 in conference play. Northwestern is 4-6. The two teams play another doubleheader today at Northwestern. Tigers 3, Reds U DETROIT (AP) - Detroit's John Wockenfuss had two hits in three trips to the place and scored the game's first run to back the combined three-hit pit- ching of four Detroit pitchers as the Tigers defeated the Cincinnati Reds 3-0 in an exhibition baseball game last night. Wockenfuss singled off Cincinnati starter and loser Mike Dowless leading off the Detroit fifth, went to second on Tom Brookens' single and scored on Mark DeJohn's one-out hit-and-run single. BIOOKEN RACED to third on the play and DeJohn took second on the throw attempting to nail Brookens. Dowless then walked Lynn Jones to load the bases and Brookens scored on a groun- der by Ed Miller. In the Detroit eighth, Jones hit a leadoff triple and scored on Jerry Turner's long fly to center field. The game, which was played for the benefit of sandlot baseball in Michigan, Ohio and nearby Canada, drew 25,449 fans and club officials said more than 50,000 tickets had been sold. Dodgers 3, Expos 2 MONTREAL (AP)- Los Angeles scored three runs in the first inning and Jerry Reuss and reliever Tom Neiden- fur made them stand up for a 3-2 Dodgers' victory yesterday over the Montreal Expos. Two of the Montreal's six hits off Reuss in 8 1-3 innings were Gary Car- ter's fourth and fifth home runs of the season. One came in the second and the other in the seventh inning, and were the first earned runs allowed in his last four starts by Reuss, who has lost once this year. NEIDENFUR, who earned his second save, came in with one out in the ninth after singles by Andre Dawson and Al Oliver. He struck out Carter and got Warren Cromarte to pop up. Reuss, who walked two batters and struck out four, boosted his career record against Montreal to 16-5. He has not lost to the Expos since July 6, 1979.
