Yankee cocaine allegations dismissed NEW YORK (AP)- A reputed cocaine dealer's allegation in a taped tonversation that one or more New York Yankee baseball players used the drug was dismissed by the judge in a narcotics trial yesterday as "third- source hearsay on top of hearsay." Justice Burton Roberts of the state Supreme Court in Manhattan said the names would not be revealed in court to keep the players from becoming "scapegoats of rumor and gossip." THE DEFENSE, however, said that news stories about the tapes had prejudiced the case of five people ac- cused of running a cocaine ring and asked for a mistrial. Defense attorney Mark Landsman also said that Yankee players might he subpoenaed to testify to dispel any impression that "my client had something to do with corrup- ting a sporta figure, a hero." Assistant district attorney Moacyr Calhelha told the judge there was no evidence "that any member of the Yankees possessed or used cocaine at any time." Roberts, who took the mistrial motion under advisement, promised to instruct the jury "that the New York Yankees are in no way involved in this particular matter and these defendants are in no way involved with the New York Yankees." "It is the duty of a court to protect in- dividuals from the ruination of their names and possible loss of prestige in a community.... where baseball players are considered something akin to saints to youngsters," Roberts said. A atatement issued by Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn'a office said, "While the story seems to be pure conjecture, we will naturally check it out as we do all such stories." 0 SCORES American League Detroit3, cincinnatis 0exhibition) Boston 5, Texas 2 Milwaukee 6,Minnesota3 National League Los Angeles 3 Montreal 2 Philadelphia 12.
