The Michigan Daily,

Brewers
By JIM DWORMAN
Special to the Daily
DETROIT - No hit, no win.
Those four words go a long way toward explaining the
Tigers' 5-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers last night at Tiger
Stadium.
DETROIT BATS didn't produce a safety off Milwaukee
starter Randy Lerch until two were out in the fifth inning.
And from then on they only managed four more off Lerch and
reliever Rollie Fingers.
For more baseball results, see Page 15.
The Brewers, meanwhile, scored the only runs they needed
off Tiger starter Milt Wilcox in the third inning. Marshall
Edwards led off with an infield single and trotted all the way
home when Paul Molitor's fly ball dropped into the second
row of seats beyond the left field wall. Robin Yount followed
with a double into the left field corner and he scored one out
later on Ted Simmons' RBI single to right, making the score
3-0.
Wilcox then pitched his way in and out of trouble until the

topTigers,
ninth when he and his relief Kevin Saucier, handed
Milwaukee two more runs.
WITH ONE OUT, Wilcox hit Molitor in the head with a pit-
ch. Then, after Molitor recovered his senses, Wilcox fired the
next pitch to Yount past Tiger catcher Lance Parrish.
Molitor moved to second and scored when Yount lined a
single to center.
Tiger manager Sparky Anderson then replaced Wilcox
with Saucier, but "Sauce" was anything but hot. The left-
handed reliever gunned a pickoff attempt past first baseman
Richie Hebner down into the Milwaukee bullpen area. Yount
raced all the way to third and scored when Cecil Cooper's
grounder eluded Hebner.
The Tigers' pair of runs came in the sixth inning. Kirk Gib-
son led off with a walk, the sixth yielded by Lerch, and after a
lineout by Parrish, scored ahead of Larry Herndon after
Herndon crushed a home run into the left field upper deck.
IT WAS THE 13th homer of the year for the Tiger left
fielder, who is enjoying his best season ever.
The Tigers got their leadoff men aboard in both the eighth
and ninth innings, but could not cross the plate against
Fingers.
