Rozelle finally admits that drug

NEW YORK (AP)- National Football League Com-
missioner Pete Rozelle says drug use in the NFL "could be a
larger problem for us than it is in society," and former
defensive end Carl Eller believes 15 percent of the league's
1,500 players are "problem users."
Eller, who has admitted he formerly used cocaine, told the
New York Daily News that his estimates of drug use are
based on his own experience and recent conversations with
NFL players.
ROZELLE previously had said he didn't think drug abuse
was a serious problem among NFL players. But the com-
missioner said he changed his mind after conferring with
Eller, an admitted former drug user and now a paid con-
sultant to the league on the subject, and examining infor-
mation gathered by the NFL security staff.
"Carl has told us enough to indicate that it's not a wave of
drug abuse," Rozelle said in an interview in Friday's New
x York Daily News. "But he gave us his feelings, having gone
through it, of what percentage on each team uses drugs. It's
just guesswork on his part, but we feel it's knowledgeable
guesswork."
;. Eller said he estimated up to 40 percent of the players had
experimented with cocaine. "I'd say every club in the league
has at least one problem user and that there are several
Rozelle problem clubs in the league," he said.

Eller also said up to 25 percent of the players in the league
"are getting into the problem stage as far as misuse of all

Gridder gets five year jail sentence
ST. LOUIS (AP)- Former defensive end Kirby Criswell of
the St. Louis Cardinals of the National Football League was
sentenced to five years in prison yesterday on two federal
drug charges.
But he remained free on $25,000 bond posted by his parents
pending an appeal.
ON. JUNE 3, a federal jury convicted Criswell, 24, of
possessing marijuana and conspiring to make metham-
phetamine, a tightly controlled stimulant.
After his conviction, Criswell was placed on waivers by the
Cardinals.
In a federal courtroom yesterday, Criswell asked U.S.
District Judge James H. Meredith for probation and a
"second chance" so he could attempt to play with the new
U.S. Football League.
Meredith handed down the stiff sentence without comment.
The maximum was six years.
"I was made an example out of," Criswell said later. "I
was used."

ited VALLADOLID, Spain (AP)- The Kuwait soccer
azil team was $175,000 richer Friday after its 1-1 draw in
the World Cup against Czechoslovakia a day earlier.
Prince Fahd Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah,
president of the Kuwait Soccer

that the sum was a personal bonus from
him to the players.
