The Michigan Daily-Friday, June 18, 1982-Page 9 Assistants wrote parts of Kosinski's novels NEW YORK (UPI) - Jerzy Kosinski, prize-winning author of such best selling novels as The Painted Bird and Being There, received "compositional help" from assistants who wrote parts of, his books, the Village Voice said Wednesday. Kosinski was in Paris and unavailable for comment on the article entitled "Jerzy Kosinski's Tainted Words," but he was quoted in the Voice as saying, that not a single word is not mine. Barbara Mackey, an assistant hired by Kosinski to help on the novel Devil Tree is quoted by the Voice as saying, "He would give me a sentence, talk philosophy, then come out with an idea that he wanted crystallized in a paragraph, page or chapter. "The ideas were all his - I think he is a brilliant thinker, central in the world and in America culture - but the words were often mine," Mackey was quoted as saying. "All I did was put it in English." Richard Hayes, an assistant hired by Kosinski for his 1979 book, "Passion Play," said Kosinski dropped an "exotic passage" in front of him and told him to "poeticize this sex." While both Hayes and Mackey-rejec- ted the idea that they were "collaborators" the Voice said their formances tonight and tomorrow night. A mixture of accordion and piano music ranging from Cajun to blues from Steve Wethy on Sunday. Rick's American Cafe (611 Church; 996-2747) The Falcons play all sorts of tunes, anything that wilmake you dance. Tonight and tomorrow night. L} Records-- not-so-sugar-free pop, give a listen to Haircut One Hundred - pelican West. -Jom Komie "Pelican West' (Arista) Haircut One Hundred is one of the big names in the new Anglo-funk movement, the latest wave headed our way from England. There's more to Haircut One Hundred than just a fad and a great name, though. These clean- cut lads are clearly connoiseurs of fine pop music. The group plays a sort of mellow, Latin-tinged funk-pop, with an emphasis on smooth vocals. Their songs remind me of the A.M. radio music I used to listen to in junior high about the trials of being a teenager in love. Their hit single, "Love Plus One," is a delightfully danceable three minutes of pure summer pop. Pelican West, their first album, is not quite up to the standards of "Love Plus One," which is fortunately included on the album. Despite the group's funk aspirations, they sound best when they stick to pop; as with "Fantastic Day." Their funk is too tame - it lacks the sexual audcity of Prince, the bravado of Rick James, or the tightness of ABC. These boys are just too nice for funk, but their sugary sweetness isa plus when it comes to pop music. So if you're in the mood for some SUBSCRIBE TO THE MICH IGAN DAILY I work amounted to "compositional help." "I would say instead that I combined, fileted, elevated or amplified his language - that I invested it with a cer- tain Latinate style that was sometimes more Hayes than Kosinski," Hayes is quoted as saying. 0"AC j 35MAPLE 6L9AG30 "1.00 TUESDAY IS DISCONTINUED" O /jg/ 415 ag~ma-945 1:30 "From 41 Columbia Pictures" 945 aVETOR 1100 1300 r 4:30 CHAWr TS 7700 D N OF TE 9:30 DtAKE EDWARDS' TOR1 0 12:00 R K O R 7:00 Ioem tos ETD ARtTS 9:45 THE MOVIES AT BRIARWOOD 144 & S.
