(AP)- Sara Hodgin wears a buttop reading "Con- struction Completed" now that she has twin 10-inch Steel rods and pieces of bone for a Spine. - "She now has a back which measures up to her nerves of steel," the mother of the 5-year-old told a reporter. ALONG WITH the steel rods, surgeons used a bone from Sara's lower legs, which were amputated, to extend her original malformed spine. Sara was discharged Wednesday from Gillette Children's Hospital in St. Paul. Yesterday; she and her parents, Fred and Anne Hodgin, left for their home in Huntsville, Ala. Surgeons performed the eight-hour amputation and implant on April 27. About 10 such spine-building cases have been reported previously, say medical sources here, but all involved children who had less spine missing than Sara. "NOBODY WITH so much (of the spine) missing has survived before," said Dr. Robert Winter, who predicted the youngster would live a long life. Because of a birth defect, Sara was born with only about half a normal spine and 10 instead of the normal 12 ribs. The spinal cord ended where her ribs did. There's no way to replace the spinal cord, so the girl has been paralyzed below the chest, said Winter. Without the operation, Sara's body would not have had the necessary sup- port. When upright, her body weight caused pressure Wsfher lungs and her lower organs because of the malfor- mation. SINCE HER LEGS were useless, they were amputated so she can be fit- ted with artificial limbs. She eventually will be taught to walk with the aid of crutches. For about six months she must wear a body cast and a halo brace on her head to steady the spine. Despite her handicap, Sara meets life bravely, said her mother. The girl is able to- get around by crawling, or as Mrs. Hodgin called it, "walking with her hands." With that type of exercise, Sara is strong enough to climb a playground slide and zip down like other kids. She enjoys paddling about in a swimming pool. In the eight-hour operation, Winter directed a team that inserted steel rods similar to those used with some scoliosis patients, who have abnor- mally curved spines. 4 0 I 4 0 Howto do well in Economy Class Simple.
