'DRUG NOT AS PERVASIVE AS REPORTED'
Gridder discusses cocaine charges
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Dwayne Woodruff can-
not, and will not, say that no National Football
League Players use cocaine, but he will say that it
doesn't happen on the Pittsburgh Steelers.
"I can tell you that it just doesn't happen in Pit-
tsburgh," said Woodruff. "That's not because the
coaches or the owners police the team. That's
because the players would never allow it."Y
WOODRUFF, A starter in the defensive backfield,
said that "Pittburgh has been a winner and drugs and
winning don't mix. You don't want to be on the field
depending on a teammate who's strung out on coke."
He's read the Sports Illustrated article in which
former pro football player Don Resse alleged that
cocaine controls professional football.
Reese and a Miami teammate were arrested for
selling cocaine to undercover police officers in 1977.
Reese served one year in jail, then played three
seasons in New Orleans. He was released by San
Diego last season.
"TO ME IT'S very sad because the man needs
help," Woodruff said during an interview with the
Louisville Times. "It's unfortunate that he damaged
the reputation of some football players without giving
them the chance to defend themselves."
Woodruff claims the drug is not as pervasive as
Reese reported.
"I'm not going to say that it's not available. But,
hey, it's available a lot of places. I can't understand
why they single out the NFL.
"I'LL TELL YOU one thing. You'll probably find
more of it on the streets of almost any town than you
will in the NFL," he continued. "My concern is that if
we do have a problem, let's do something positive to
solve that problem."
A University of Lousiville graduate, Woodruff has
been in the .league three years and, he said, "I've
never touched cocaine or reefer marijuana. I respect
myself and my body too much for that."
He said that if Reese has a problem, "let's-help him
and then get him out telling his story to other athletes
so the problem is solved."

Miller, Bill
Walton? and
Dave Covyens ?
From the Associated Press
Three people whose names are familiar to sports fans
are on the comeback trail or are considering making a
comeback. The three names are Red Miller, Bill Walton
and Dave Cowens. Whereas Miller returned to the head
coaching ranks yesterday, Walton and Cowens (both of
whom were MVPs during their NBA careers) are con-
sidering ending theirrespective retirements according to
a published report.
Red Miller
Miller, former Denver Broncos football coach, was
named head coach and general manager of the United
States Football League's Denver Franchise which will
be named the Denver Gold.
THE OWNER OF the club, Ron Blanding, named the
53-year-old Miller at a news conference yesterday mor-
ning. Miller was fired by the Broncos in March 1981.
The fledgling Denver Gold, whose colors will be black
and gold, will begin competition in spring 1983.
Miller was the coach of the Broncos from 1977 through
1980. The Broncos won their first American Conference
championship in'1977 and went on to the Super Bowl in
January 1978, when they lost to Dallas 27-10.
Bill Walton.
Sources described as Walton's closest friends by The
New York Times were quoted in the newspaper's
editions yesterday as saying Walton will meet with San
Diego Clippers' officials and intensify his training.
Walton, who underwent foot surgery in January 1981,
was pictured as wanting to determine if his foot could
withstand the vigorous physical activity a return to pro
basketball would involve.
WALTON, 29, HAS been on the Clippers' injured-
reserve list since his retirement in March 1981.
Dare Cowens
The Times reported that Red Auerbach, the Celtics'
president-and general manager, has been telling other
general managers that Cowens, 33, has been working out
and was considering a return to the club.Cowens retired
in October 1980 and is now the athletic director at Regis
College, a woman's school near Boston.
This is the first I've heard of it," said Jeff Twiss,
assistant public relations director for the Celtics in
Boston.

NCAA to investigate
Illini grid recruiting
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - A National Collegiate Athletic Association official
will arrive today at the University of Illinois to look into the recruiting of two junior
college football players, school officials say.
The university's president, chancellor and athletic director are out of town, but
Chuck Smrt of the NCAA should be able to talk with football coach Mike White.
"THE NCAA HAS received some complaints so they're sending in someone to
ask questions," said White. "It is a routine matter than has been overblown."
Athletic director Neale Stoner said several weeks ago when the inquiry was an-
nounced that it apparently dealt with the recruiting of Elton Veals and Delton Ed-
wards, who both attended Merritt Calif. Junior College.
Merritt President John Greene said the NCAA questioneds him about who paid
his airplane fare to Champaign, and he told the investigator that he paid for the
trip himself.
VEALS AND EDWARDS, who had expressed interest in several schools,
enrolled at Illinois in January, but left a few days later complaining about the
severe winter weather.
Greene said he knew of no recruiting violation by Illinois, and said he was sorry
that the two left "a first-rate school with a first-rate football program."
Greene said he knew some offers were made to Veals and Edwards in violation
of NCAA rules, but that he had informed the NCAA.
