State commends ILIR
for 'valuable researeh'
By SCOTT STUCKAL
State Rep. Perry Bullard (D-Ann
Arbor) presented the University's In-
stitute for Labor and Industrial
Research last night with a legislative
resolution commending the institute for
its outstanding research effort.
Bullard, who presented the citation
during a banquet at the Sheraton
University Inn, said ILIR "does a very
good job for the state by spreading the
education and resources of the Univer-
sity to working-class people."
THE RESOLUTION, which coincides
with the institute's 25th anniversary,
cited "valuable research" in such
labor areas as collective bargaining.
labor markets, and worker health.
ILIR currently is undergoing a
budgetary review which could lead tothe
institute's elimination. Director
Malcom Cohen said he "appreciated
the confidence given to us by the state
legislature," and that, despite the
review, morale at the institute is high.
Cohen said he hopes ILIR's "next 25
years will lead to innovative and
creative solutions" to Michigan's labor
problems.
ILIR's research, much of which helps
support the institution investigates
"where the jobs are going to be in the
future," how increasing automation
may displace unskilled workers, Cohen
said.
Also during last night's banquet, the
first graduates from an ILIR program
that educates minority women for
leadership roles in the workplace were
recognized, according to Hy Kornbluh,
director of the federally-funded project.
