Trek style
always balanced. Behind all of Kirk's
exploits there has stood a man backing
him up as a friend and letter-perfect
science officer. In this movie, Spock
appears more relaxed with the conflict
of his emotions vs. his logical
background. He is happy to serve his
admiral and to do his best for Starfleet
Command.
Never to be forgotten is the crew of
the Enterprise: Walter Keonig,
Chekov; Nichelle Nichols, Uhura;
George Takei, Sulu; James Doohan,
Scotty; and DeForest Kelley, Doctor
McCoy. These men and women have
survived 78 episodes and an earlier
movie; they know exactly how to run
the ship. Trek II is just another suc-
cessful mission accomplished with
finesse and style.
Returning from exile is Ricardo Mon-
talban, Fantasy Island's enigmatic
proprietor. For those that think Mon-
talban's acting is too crude to watch, it
is perfect for Star Trek. His style is to
quietly overact and that's exactly what
Kirk needs ina villain.
Of course, the question on the lips of
Star Trek fans is does Spock die? It's an
important question, for Spock has
grown to be a friend to us all. He is wise
and yet understanding, always coldly
logical, yet knowing when heated
emotions would serve better. If Spock
dies, could there possible be any more
movies? What would Kirk do at the loss
of his friend? Let's just say that under
the deft direction of Nicholas Meyer,
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is one
of the best episodes filmed, and we'll let
the credits roll as Spock recites the new
version of the classic prologue:
These are the continuing voyages
of the Starship Enterprise. Its
ongoing mission: to explore strange
new worlds, to seek out new life
forms and new civilizations, to
boldly go where no man has gone
before.
