NCAA Championships filled with
many near misses for tracksters
} By RON POLLACK
An inch here, and a tenth of a second
there and the Michigan track team
would be able to look upon this
weekend's NCAA Track and Field
Championships as reason for
celebration. As it is, those who com-
peted will have to be content with what

mighthave been.
Of the nine Wolverines who competed
in Provo, Utah, only Dave Lugin
qualified for the finals in his event- the
high jump. There were plenty of near
misses, however.
IN THE LONG jump, Derek Harper
missed qualifying for the finals by two
and three-quarter inches with a leap of
25'0Y4". For Vince Bean, the distance
between his jump and the long jump
qualifying was even shorter-one inch.
Bean jumped 25'2". Bean and Harper
finished in 16th and 19th place, respec-
tively.
On a level with Bean for the "oh so
close, and yet so far" award was Mike
Shea who came within a blink of an
eyelash of qualifying in the 800-meter
run. Shea turned ina time of 1:48.59, .02
short of earning him a spot in the finals.
Another to just miss qualifying was
Shelby Johnson who finished the 400-
meter intermediate hurdles in a time of
51.40.
ONE WOLVERINE who did qualify
for the finals was Lugin. He did so by
clearing 7'1%" in the high jump com-
petition. From there, he went on to
make heights of 7'2 " and 7'3 "
before failing to clear 75".
Despite the fact that he made the
finals, Lugin's performance came up
just a bit short as had his teammates
who narrowly missed making the finals
in their events. In Lugin's case, he just
missed earning All-American honors.
Sixteen jumpers cleared the height of
more overall misses. The top 12 places
are given All-American status, but
Lugin did not fall into this category due
to his number of misses which pushed
him out of the top 12.
Nonetheless, Michigan head coach
Jack Harvey was pleased with Lugin's
performance, a career best.
"THAT WAS great," said Harvey
who was named the District IV Coach of
the Year over the weekend. "That was
the greatest high jump field assembled
anywhere, even the olympics. A couple
of guys were going for the world record.
That was Dave's best jump ever. I think
that was the second best jump ever in
the Big Ten."
The two high jumpers who were going
for the world record were Milt Ottey of
UTEP and Del Davis of UCLA. Neither
broke the World Record, but both
cleared 7'74".
Michigan's other representatives at
the NCAA's were Andrew Bruce, Brian
Diemer, Bill O'Reilly and Johnny
Nielsen. Bruce turned in times of 10.67
and 21.0 in the 100- and 200-meter
dashes. Nielsen threw the shot put
59'6%". Diemer finished the 3,000-
meter steeplechase in a time of 9:25.65,
while O'Reilly ran the 5,000 meters in
14:55.79.

head coaching job
BOULDER, Colo. (AP)- Bill McCar-
tney, defensive coordinator for the
Michigan football team, yesterday
became the third prospective football
coach interviewed by University of
Colorado officials. Earlier, CU athletic
director Eddie Crowder was host to
coaches Chuck Shelton of Drake
University and LaVell Edwards of
Brigham Young University. Edwards
later said he had withdrawn his name
from consideration.
The CU job came open last week
when Chuck Fairbanks announced his
resignation after three dismal years
with the Buffaloes. Fairbanks, with the
New England Patriots before coming to
Colorado, will become President and
coach of the New York franchise of the
new United States Football League.
MCCARTNEY, 41, has been with
Michigan since 1974, when he joined the
Wolverine staff as defensive end coach.
He has been defensive coordinator for
five seasons.
A move to Boulder and the CU staff
would be a return to the Big Eight for
McCartney who graduated from
Missouri in 1962. He played, on two
EWIS. Orange Bowl squads as a linebacker
and gained second-team Big Eight
honors as a senior.

Slamming it home
With the Michigan track team having finished competing at the NCAA's, t
1981-1982 Wolverine athletic season came to an end. Thus, Ann Arborites w
now have to take to participating in athletics on campus rather than viewi
them. This individual shows that he clearly knows how to do the former.
