Page 8-Saturday, June 5, 1982--The Michigan Daily Karate champion turns to acting 4 HOLLYWOOD (UPI) - Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood and other ac- tion-adventure stars would happily trade -some of their millions for an Oscar or outright critical praise. But no millionaire actor seeks recognition with greater zeal than Chuck Norris, the top martial arts film star. Norris' box-office record is astonishing. His seven films cost a total of $12 million and have earned more than $200 million, making him one of the most popular actors in the world. Inevitably, he receives scathing reviews if, indeed, critics deign to recognize his movies at all. Norris is a sandy-haired, mustachioed physical specimen with an engaging grin and self-effacing man- ner. But he can't live down his past, which includes the 1968 professional world middleweight karate champion- ship. But it was karate and such films as Good Guys Wear Black, A Force of One and Silent Rage that made Norris a movie star. Like Eastwood and Reynolds, he's found stardom and millions aren't enough. He'd rather be Olivier. To that end, he studies acting with Nina Foch. A devout Baptist, he lec- tures youth on motivational techniques. Through faith, discipline and hard work, Norris believes he will succeed. "I'm convinced a man can accom- plish almost anything with positive per- sistence and determination to achieve specific goals," he said. "That's how I mastered the martial arts and that's how I'm attacking acting. "I've finally learned to relax for the camera and allow my emotions to show. It wasn't easy, because in karate you conceal your emotions and thoughts." Norris also learned from watching Eastwood movies and listening to ad- vice fr9m the late Steve McQueen, a long-time friend and karate student. 4 4 Daily Classifieds Get Results-- Norris ... wants to be Olivier Mon, Tue Thur, Fri, 7:25-9:25"" "'Sun Wed SatSunWed,1:00.3:05-5:15-7:25-9:35 1:25-3:25-5:25;7:25;9:25 10-:551-:593 Funny, ender, the remarkable eou'M* .1 VTfy~u neulA see what AUNRSA sR[[heRo The other sice of WINNER OF World WarIl. 3 ACADEMY Q AWARDS ..
