Dave Kopf and Rich Stoll held the Hurons--who entered the game with a' .324 team batting average-to just three hits in the eight-inning opener and Steve Ontiveros, Gary Wayne and Tim Karazim combined to do the same in game two as Michigan upped its record to 33-7. The Wolverines took the first game by scoring a run in the seventh to send the game into extra innings and then exploding for six more in the eighth. John Young led off the seventh by lining a single to center. JAIME VELA pinch ran for Young and advanced to second on a single by Tony Evans. But Vela was thrown out at third by Huron catcher Tom Siefert while trying to advance on a pitch that skipped away from the Eastern backstop. MAJOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP: Tigers rally to edge Rangers, 6-4 By JOE CHAPELLE special to the Daily DETROIT - Left fielder Larry Herndon was the hero last night knocking in the winning run with an eighth inning double to give the Detroit Tigers a 6-4 victory over the Texas Rangers. The crowd gave Herndon a standing ovation chanting "We want Larry," after the game. Tiger first baseman Enos Cabell began the Tiger rally in the eighth by dribbling the ball past Ranger second baseman Bill Stein and turning on the speed for a double. Detroit center fielder Kirk Gibson, then singled to send Cabell to third. Designated hitter Jerry Turner then singled to tie the game by knocking in Cabell and sending Gibson to third. HERNDON THEN stepped to the plate and drilled theball to left-center to bring in Turner and Gibson. Herndon was called out at third, however, trying to stretch a double into a triple. Texas' third baseman Buddy Bell, who had four hits in the game, started the scoring for the Rangers in the first inning with a solo home run into the second deck in left field. The Rangers scored again in the fourth as Bell doubled and Jim Sundberg scored him with a poke single to left.{ Detroit got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Herndon started things off for the Bengals with a triple. Tiger catcher Lance Parrish then singled to. score Herndon. Parrish followed that by stealing second and went on to third when Sundberg's throw rolled into center field. Parrish scored on a Charlie Hough wild pitch, and the score was tied at 2-2. The Rangers added two more runs in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead, but the Tigers narrowed that to 4-3 in their half of the inning. Cardinals 7, Cubs 6 ST.
